Xbox Series X or PS5, which is better? Many users may ask themselves the question. We explain to you whether you should buy a PlayStation or rather an Xbox.

With PS5 and Xbox Series X you can buy two powerful consoles for 1.5 years. But which console should I buy if I have to choose one?

MeinMMO explains the similarities and differences between PS5 and Xbox Series X. You will also find out which console you should ultimately choose.

Xbox vs PS5: Appearance, Design and Build

What does the Xbox look like? The design of the Xbox Series X is based on a cube shape and the color black. For the small Xbox Series S, Microsoft relies on a white design. The Xbox Series X has a drive, the Series S doesn’t have one. The Xbox Series X is around 30 centimeters high and 15.1 cm in length and depth. The Xbox Series X is almost twice the size of the Xbox One.

What does the PS5 look like? The PS5 is only available in a white design and is currently the largest console on the market. Because with its height of 39 centimeters, it is significantly higher than the Xbox Series X and is also a bit heavier. In terms of length and depth, it has a size of 10.4 and 26 centimeters.

The design of the PS5 is highly controversial and not all gamers like it. In the meantime, Sony has also introduced colorful sideplates for the PS5, with which you can personalize the PS5. The Digital Edition of the PS5 is also white, but has no built-in drive.

Specs and hardware

What does the Xbox Series X offer? An AMD processor with a graphics chip is installed in the Xbox Series X. The processor clocks at 3.8 GHz and the graphics chip has a raw performance of 12 teraflops. There is also 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD with a write speed of 2.4 GB/s. The Xbox Series X supports both Full HD, WQHD, 4K and 8K resolutions. The Xbox Series X offers you a maximum of WQHD (1440p).

It is practical that you can continue to use your old Xbox controller on the Xbox Series X. Because Microsoft has only slightly revised the controller for the new console. You can therefore continue to use the best controllers for Xbox Series X and Xbox One on the Xbox Series X.

What does the PS5 offer? An AMD processor with a graphics chip is also installed in the PS5. The processor clocks at 3.5 GHz. However, the clock can be controlled by the hardware. The graphics chip offers a raw performance of 10.3 teraflops and is therefore less potent on paper than the Xbox Series X. However, a developer had explained that the teraflops are not that important for the PS5. There is also 16 GB of RAM and an 825 GD SSD with a write speed of 5.5 GB/s.

Unlike Microsoft, Sony has given the PS5 a new controller, the DualSense controller for the PS5. It differs greatly from the old DualShock-4.

The PS5 supports both Full HD, 4K and 8K resolutions. However, the PS5 does not offer WQHD resolution.

What do both consoles offer? Resolutions up to 8K are supported on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. A 4K HD BluRay optical drive is also installed in both consoles. Both consoles offer you hardware-accelerated ray tracing, since both PS5 and Xbox rely on the same chip from AMD.

PlayStation 5 vs Xbox: Which Games?

What games does the Xbox offer? The Xbox offers a few exclusive titles, including Starfield, which will not be released for the PS5. The greatest strength of the Xbox Series X is the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Many top titles are included right at the release, but also smaller games from indie studios. Overall, you have access to several hundred games for just under 13 euros a month.

With a trick you can save a lot of money with the Game Pass. However, you can also play the Game Pass and many Xbox games on the PC, Microsoft relies on Xbox exclusivity for very few games.

What games does the PS5 offer? Many games such as “God of War”, “The Last of Us” or the series “Ratchet & Clank” appear first for the PlayStation and remain exclusive for a long time. But now Sony is also more open here and more titles are appearing for the PC. What is certain, however, is that you can still only play many games exclusively on the PS4 and PS5. The PS4 controller is no longer sufficient for new PS5 games either, you absolutely need a new DualSense controller for PS5 games.

PS5 and Xbox Series X: backwards compatibility

How about the Xbox? Microsoft is much more open here than Sony. The Xbox Series X officially offers backward compatibility with many titles for Xbox 360, Xbox and Xbox One. You can therefore also play very old games on your new Xbox. The Xbox then emulates the old generation runtime environment. So you can also play the Xbox-exclusive “Fable 2” on the Xbox Series X.

Tip: Some backward compatible games are no longer available for sale. If you have purchased a backward compatible game on Xbox 360 or have a game disc then you can also play those games on the Xbox Series X|S console. Only digital games will work on the Series S.

How about the PS5? Only games from the PS4 era are officially backward compatible on the PS5. A handful of games don’t work. You can’t play your old PS3 games on the PS5. However, you can stream old PS1 and PS2 games on the PS4 and PS5 via PlayStation Now and in the future also with the new PS Plus.

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which is the best console for you?

This speaks for the Xbox Series X: On paper, the Xbox Series X is currently the fastest console on the market. With Game Pass Ultimate you have access to hundreds of games. If you only want to use the Game Pass, then Microsoft offers an unbeatably cheap offer with the Series S if you want next-gen. With Dolby Vision, the Xbox also supports a technology that the PS5 does not offer.

In addition to Game Pass, the Xbox Series X offers a few exclusive titles. Because you can play many games on the PC without any problems.

Per

  • theoretically most powerful console
  • all Xbox games playable on next-gen
  • Game Pass with hundreds of games
  • Series S very cheap
  • BluRay player supports Dolby Vision
against

  • few exclusive titles for the Xbox

That speaks for the PS5: On the PS5 you have a lot of exclusive games that you can only play on the PlayStation. Sony will continue to release exclusively for the PS5. With the DualSense, the PS5 also offers a controller with unique features not found on the Xbox.

The PS5’s SSD storage is also very fast, but it’s smaller than the Xbox’s. If you want to install a lot of games, sooner or later you will have to buy a new SSD for your PS5. The design of the PS5 is also very large and does not fit in every TV cabinet.

Per

  • Many exclusive games
  • unique DualSense control
  • very fast SSD storage
  • PS5 without drive same performance as with drive
against

  • Less storage than available on Xbox
  • very big design
  • lack of support of WQHD.

PS5 or Xbox?

Why buy an Xbox? On the Xbox Series X you are very flexible thanks to the game subscription and can play hundreds of games at no extra charge. This is especially useful if you want to try out a lot of games and don’t want or can’t commit yourself. The Series S is also worthwhile as a second console if you don’t want to spend more than 300 euros for a console and only want to stream.

Why buy a PS5? If you always want the latest AAA titles from Sony and can’t do without series like “The Last of Us” or “Ratchet & Clank”, then the PS5 is the better choice for you. If you have a lot of PS4 games in your closet, you should go for the version with a drive.

If you don’t care about the decision: In conclusion, it can be said that the consoles do little to each other. Because most games appear for both Xbox and PS5. You can easily play games like “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla” or the “Call Of Duty” series on both consoles. Many games now also offer crossplay (playing between Xbox, PS5 and PC). The PS5 is only slightly ahead when it comes to exclusive titles.
