If you’ve seen the trailers for Sonic Frontiers so far, you’ve probably noticed how the blue blur can now do a lot more attacks.
In a recent interview with IGN, Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto mentioned how Sonic Team implemented a much more “elaborate” combat system this time around. Sonic Team reportedly never “put a huge emphasis on combat” in previous titles, according to Kishimoto.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie was apparently a “big inspiration” behind the new battle mechanics in Sonic Frontiers:
“First [Sonic the Hedgehog] The movie really took me by surprise. We’ve been focused on how Sonic is supposed to run, jump and fight within our games, but the movie showed us a whole new approach. They came up with a great interpretation of Sonic, which became a huge inspiration for the development of Sonic Frontiers…
“The direction we took for the fight was inspired by the movie. After watching it, I came up with a vision for the game’s combat.”
Apparently, this combat system was felt “necessary” so that players would have “more elements to enjoy” within the new open area design in Sonic Frontiers. Kishimoto also mentioned how there were other references in Frontiers to the original Sonic movie, and he thinks it’s great to have a positive rivalry with something else:
“It’s great to have a positive rivalry like that… If the movies do something, we’d like to counter that with our next game, and vice versa.”
