The more you pay in Diablo Immortal, the less it brings - claims one player

Diablo Immortal’s monetization is a huge topic that doesn’t seem to get any rest. A player has now taken the trouble to calculate exactly how big the advantage actually is if you pay. The result surprises.

This is what the player says: in one thread on reddit the user rwxwuxiaworld explains what advantages paying players have in PvE Diablo Immortal. In doing so, he picks up on the big discussion about the Pay2Win factor in Immortal and classifies it a little better.

According to his own expenses, he spent $1,000 himself, the equivalent of about 950 euros. Together with other players, he calculated the strength of characters, up to an investment of the equivalent of 33,000 euros.

The result is quite surprising. He says: The more you pay, the slower it goes. Or, in other words: the more you pay, the more expensive it is on average to become one point proportionally stronger.

To better illustrate the point, he provides a listing of different gradations of money being invested.

In economics this is called the “law of diminishing marginal utility”. This roughly describes that the consumption of each additional unit of something has a lower utility than the previous unit. So: the more you consume, the less you get from it. The more you drink, the less thirsty you are, so the need for water decreases with every sip. You can find more about this in Lexicon of the Dreiklang Training Manufactory.

Combat rating limits progress

What is it about? Specifically, rwxwuxiaworld speaks of a system that is extremely important in Diablo Immortal, but is hardly explained: the combat rating. This determines how much damage you deal or receive.

Roughly speaking, the following applies to the combat rating: every point of the rating that you are below the recommendation increases your damage received by 1%. You also deal less damage. It is similar when you are above it.

It is theoretically possible to master challenges such as higher portals or levels of hell, but it will be extremely difficult. There are only limited ways to increase the battle rating, as the user explains:

This only applies to PvE. In PvP, the utility is limited, systems like resonance count more here, but that’s a completely different topic.

How far can I get without paying? Paying players have an advantage as they can more easily upgrade legendary items and gems. This provides a boost in combat rating. rwxwuxiaworld lists what benefits you get with how much money:

  • Completely Free2Play: Battle rating of 1,368 possible, enough for Hell 2
  • Free2Play with Battle Pass: Battle rating of 1,456
  • around €190: combat rating of 1,608
  • around €477: combat rating of 1,716
  • around €953: combat rating of 1,842
  • around €1,526: combat rating of 1,986
  • around €4,768: combat rating of 2,254
  • around €33,000 (simulated, not tested): combat rating of 2,848

He compares necromancers with similar gear on Paragon 30. With more money, however, better and stronger gems are possible at higher ranks, which cause the change in combat rating. Awakening Legendary Gems, on the other hand, has no effect.

You can also get the Legendary Gems for free. In the video we explain how the mechanics behind it work:

What does that mean? According to the calculation, players who spend 33,000 euros would be on the same level as those who “only” spend 4,768 euros. Both would have to farm hell 3 after combat rating, one only a little longer than the other. Hell 4 already requires a rating of 3,250.

From this point on, a paying player would have to spend around 47 euros per improvement point, according to rwxwuxiaworld. At the beginning it was just around 1-3 euros.

Limited grind is Diablo Immortal’s big problem

Theoretically, it is possible to advance without paying. However, Diablo Immortal imposes some limits on the grind.

Because in addition, the actual character progress is capped. The higher you are in the level, the slower you level up after a certain point. The reason for this is the so-called server paragon.

Once you exceed the server’s paragon, you will receive less experience. At the same time, equipment is linked to a certain Paragon level, so you can only create better items from these points.

Even paying players come up against these limits and the community is currently very concerned about that. MeinMMO author Maik Schneider has already dealt with this:

I’m now in the endgame of Diablo Immortal and suddenly Pay2Win isn’t the biggest problem anymore
