Sea of Thieves wants intrepid players to collect Ashen Keys, so we’re going to help you locate them, and if you can amass them, we’ll show you how to use them in Ashen Chests.
The unifying nature of Sea of Thieves is why people keep gathering in groups, boarding a ship, and sailing off to new adventures. New expansions that throw a lot of content into the play such as exciting quests are one of the many reasons why navigating the treacherous waters of Sea of Thieves is endlessly tempting.
Another obvious reason is the lure of the loot and wealth that can be found through pillaging the islands and hunting for treasure, of the Ashen Chests variety.
How to Get Ashen Keys in Sea of Thieves
There are two key ways (no pun intended) to get Asken Keys in Sea of Thieves, kill an Ashen Key Master or get extremely good luck fishing
The more likely of these two methods is going to be killing Ashen Key Mastersunmistakable skeletons surrounded by an intimidating red aura.
If you intend to go after Ashen Key Masters, you will need to know where exactly they are. There are several different ways to do this, and it’s up to you to find the most efficient/easiest way.
The first way is to raid Skeleton Forts since they can appear randomly during the battle. If you find this isn’t as effective as you’d like, you can always check the coastline of the various islands as they may be wandering around.
If you are lucky enough to trigger an encounter with one, be prepared for a battle as they will not be easy to kill. They can take a lot of damage and can recover health. Don’t be greedy, just be patient and chip away at his health, and keep your blunderbuss ready for crucial moments to deal massive damage.
If you defeat one, it will drop an Ashy Key.
It’s pretty easy, with an ashen key in your possession, you simply need to approach an ashen chest with the key, use the interact button and the chest will open revealing your goodies inside.
Ashen Chests are rare containers that contain valuable resources and can only be obtained through the use of an Ashen Key.
Each chest will have three loot items for you to collect and these will consist of:
- an ashen tome
- Either of the following two:
- sulfur coffin
- Devil’s Remnant
- bag of doubloons
- Extra Ashen Tome
- magma grail
- ritual skull
- roaring chalice
There doesn’t seem to be any way to guarantee the loot you get, so if you’re after something in particular, you’ll just have to keep farming Ashen Chests.
With a key in hand and the knowledge of Ashen Chests in hand, you now need to find an Ashen Chest. There are a few known ways to find a chest, and we’ve listed them below.
Choose your option from this list:
- Guaranteed: Defeat a Skeleton Fort
- Guaranteed: Defeat a captain’s ship in a fleet
- Guaranteed: Solving an Ashen Guardian’s Notes Quest
- Guaranteed: Complete an Ashen Chest Storage Trip
- Nope Guaranteed: kill a kraken
- Nope Guaranteed: Kill a Megalodon
- Nope Guaranteed: Kill an Ashen Lord
- Nope Guaranteed: Find aboard a skeleton ship
A guaranteed chest is always preferable, of course, but not necessarily the easiest task. It’s up to you which one you prefer, but as long as you take home the pirate equivalent of bacon, that’s all that matters!
