Genre: Action Adventure Developer: DYA Games Platform: PC, switch release: October 14, 2021

Resident Evil gameplay, anime characters, GBA visuals, all on the Switch – Sounds wild? Yes, Evil Tonight does throw an unfamiliar combination of ingredients into a bowl, but what comes out is a cute little Switch title that should appeal to open-minded and nostalgic Resi fans.

This is how Evil Tonight plays

It’s all about this: In the game you slip into the skin of Silvia, a medium who travels to another dimension to take on evil energy. She explores an old mansion and the mechanics of the game should be all too familiar to Resi fans.

Fight and Survival: Silvia fights all kinds of monsters, from running root men to knife-wielding ladies in long dresses to shooting tentacled creatures. She uses firearms like pistol and crossbow as well as a knife and has to find ammo and healing items. You can see what it looks like in the trailer:

Exploration also plays a major role. We look for different motif keys (sword key, coin key…), have to find our way around the villa and solve puzzles such as a sliding puzzle.

Particularities: But Evil Tonight also has some peculiarities. If we draw our weapon, we are in combat mode and can switch through our arsenal and take a quick dodge step, but we cannot interact with objects. So we always have to switch back and forth quickly to get ready for attacks. In addition, we have to economize in combat mode with our stamina.

the story

The game mechanics are clearly reminiscent of survival horror classics and the setting at first glance, but Evil Tonight is clearly a cute interpretation of the genre that doesn’t rely on a first or adult tone. The mansion is an academy where teenagers used to study performing arts, which we learn from diary entries.

The academy we are studying used to teach performing arts.

The anime characters with their big wide eyes don’t tell us blood-curdling stories, but make it clear that the game doesn’t take itself too seriously. Silvia, for example, sometimes gets lost in shopping dimensions and ghosts hate being called evil. Even scaredy-cats who fancy the style or gameplay needn’t fear this little bite. the game time is about 5 to 7 hours.

I’m always on the lookout for small, entertaining titles for my Switch Lite that I use to gamble away from the sofa at home. I discovered Evil Tonight because it got a lot of praise from a community member under our “What are you playing this weekend?” article.

In fact, I think it’s a great title for my Switch usage. I love the Resident Evil gameplay in general and I like the in-game implementation. The whole thing isn’t scary, but the title builds up tension, since only the area around Silvia is lit up on the screen and I’m often suddenly jumped at and quickly have to draw the right weapon.

The rooms of the villa look lovingly designed and the GBA look, which I appreciate for nostalgic reasons, is in my opinion very well suited for the handheld. It conveys such a stylish lightness. The puzzles could be a bit more complex for me and I don’t play the title for the story either, but I really enjoy the setting, style and mechanics. If you don’t shy away from the wild mix, take a look.

What do you think of this mix? Could the title be something for you?
