PS5 Slim: YouTuber builds mini version of the popular console

We’ll have to be patient for Sony’s official PS5 Slim. So one English YouTuber just took matters into his own hands.

Manchester, England – DIY Perks publishes exciting do-it-yourself tech-related tutorials on YouTube. For example, he shows his 3.6 million subscribers how they can build their own headphones or entire computers. To do this, he uses old electronic components and fuses them with new parts, which he produces himself from various raw materials. In his latest project he managed to build a slim version of the PS5.

Manufacturer Sony Interactive Entertainment (YOU)
Type stationary game console
generation 9th console generation

PS5: criticism of size and weight – slim version could be the solution

There were many critical voices about the release of the PS5, which criticized the size and weight of the console. The hard drive version of PlayStation still weighs 4.5 kilograms, making it the heaviest console on the market. Also because of the design, the internet was flooded with memes for the release, in which the PS5 can be seen, for example, as a skyscraper in Dubai. The housing of the drive model has the following dimensions:

  • Width: 39cm
  • Height 10.4cm
  • Depth: 26cm

Sony should also be clear that something has to change, but due to the current shortage of semiconductors and graphics chips, an official slim version of the console is not yet in sight. However, the YouTuber DIY Perks has now taken on this problem and worked on a PS5 Slim himself.

PS5 Slim: “Lets fix that!” – YouTuber builds slim version of the console

In a 30-minute YouTube video, DIY Perks explains in great detail how he compressed the PS5 down to an inch. To do this, he disassembles the console and removes both the motherboard and the power supply, both of which are already up to six centimeters high.

The cooling system of the PS5 also takes up a lot of space in the case. In its slim version, DIY Perks therefore focuses on water cooling, which is also used in many PCs. The hobbyist has also come up with something for the power supply problem, because this is now to be installed externally. Sony already used this trick in its slim versions of the PS1 and PS2.

The YouTuber welded his new construction between thin copper plates and tested the console directly. But with the original motherboard of the PS5, the picture freezes when playing. It quickly becomes clear that the slim version needs a completely new motherboard to run.

PS5 Slim variant shows better performance than the original

The YouTuber then proudly presents his new console and shows excerpts from a multi-hour game session from Horizon Forbidden West. During this time, he measures the temperatures of his Slim variant. Compared to those of the original, the Mini PS5 runs much cooler. The differences are as follows:

But if you are now full of euphoria about rebuilding your own PS5, you should be careful. Because in his video it becomes clear that this project is by no means easy. You need a lot of technical skill and very expensive components to turn your PS5 into a slim version.

But perhaps Sony can take a little cue from DIY Perks’ changes to launch their own slim version. Until then, you can pass the time with the games in the new PS Plus subscription or follow the leaks for the PS5 Pro controller.
