With a simple setting you can extend the life of your graphics card

You bought a graphics card from AMD or Nvidia and want to use the GPU as long as possible? Then make a small adjustment: This only costs you a few seconds, but can give your hardware many months.

Anyone who buys a graphics card often invests a lot of money and then wants to be able to gamble with it for the next few years. With a simple setting, you can protect your graphics card without having to forego performance. MeinMMO explains how it works.

Limit your FPS and protect your expensive hardware

You probably know this: You’re sitting in the main menu waiting for you to be able to connect to the game server. While you’re waiting, your hardware is already working at full speed. In the main menu you suddenly have thousands of frames per second (FPS)

In practice, however, you can start with this, as there isn’t much you can do in the main menu. Some games also like to deliver more than 1000 FPS ingame. In practice, however, you don’t benefit from this if your monitor does not have more than 240 Hz.

FPS indicates how many frames are displayed per second. The more frames you see per second, the smoother the game runs in theory. 30 FPS is the magic limit. Everything below is jerky and unplayable for many users.

What is the problem? The higher the FPS ingame, the more the hardware is under load. Because your graphics card has to calculate the FPS. Hardware under load quickly becomes noisy and hot.

So if you leave your hardware running under such a load all the time, it will theoretically have a negative impact on your hardware. You don’t benefit from these absurdly high FPS values at all, since you will hardly notice a difference with more than 300.

In addition, you can only use the high FPS numbers if you use a corresponding monitor with a refresh rate of 240 or 360 Hz. However, if you only have a screen with 144 Hz or even 60 Hz, you will not benefit from your hardware running hot under load.

In the worst case, your hardware can even break, as the discussion about broken graphics cards at the MMO New World shows. Here Amazon Games had installed an FPS limiter as a solution.

This is how you limit your FPS with an AMD or Nvidia graphics card

How much should I limit my FPS? Your gaming monitor is a good decision-making aid. If you have a display with a refresh rate of 144 Hz, then you should set that as the limit for your limit. Best case scenario, you’ll test out different settings until you find the one that best suits your playstyle.

Limit FPS with an Nvidia graphics card: If you have an Nvidia graphics card, then proceed as follows:

  • Selects the NVIDIA Control Panel in Windows. Alternatively, you can right-click and then select “Nvidia Control Center”.
  • In the left menu you go to the 3D settings and click on “Manage 3D settings”. In the new window you select “Global settings”.
  • Here there is the setting “Max. Frame Rate.” This is normally disabled. You now activate this and select your desired maximum frame rate.

  • Opens the AMD Radeon Software, either via the Windows search or by clicking on the taskbar at the bottom right.
  • Now select the small gear wheel in the top right corner of the software and then select the “Graphics” item in the submenu.
  • Now scroll all the way down and select “Advanced.”
  • Now activate the item “Control of the target frame rate.” Here you can now set your desired maximum frame rate with a controller.
