The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so well received by its fans mainly because of the great freedom and open world. A new, unofficial fan DLC turns this principle completely upside down. In fact, Doors of Doom sends us through a dungeon as a mini-game and we are constantly spoiled for choice whether we want to go through the left or the right door. That sounds a lot more boring than it plays and comes up with some exciting ideas around the corner.

Zelda BotW: Fan DLC revolves around a dungeon full of doors

That’s what it’s about: Hardcore fans of Zelda BotW are eagerly awaiting the sequel to the Nintendo Switch blockbuster. But because it is a long time coming and there is no new content for the original, modders are simply making their own. This results in extensive expansions like the Second Wind DLC or grandiose, compact experiments like this one. The latest fan DLC is coming soon and it’s called Doors of Doom.

How does the DLC work? In Doors of Doom, after the Zelda Breath of the Wild story events, you will be invited to a very special dungeon. It was designed by modder Waikuteru and always presents you with an actually very simple decision: you have to choose one of two doors through which you want to go. One leads to the next room, the other means the end of the mini-game.

But that was not all: To make things a lot more exciting, there are some tricks and bonuses. For example, you may eventually encounter Zelda, who grants you a “Second Wind” perk. With this you have an extra life that you can use if you get the wrong door. However, you must then also compete against an opponent and defeat them in order to be able to continue. The enemies will of course get stronger as you progress.

Additionally, you can also talk to a character modeled after the modder Waikuteru himself, who will share fun facts about the person and their modding career. You’ll also get some hints for the Doors of Doom mini-game: there seem to be clues in the rooms that could indicate what’s behind which door. Of course there is money as a reward, but participation also costs money.

The big catch: You can only actually play Doors of Doom if you run Zelda BotW on a PC. Of course, this is not easy, you need an emulator for this and you are automatically moving on thin ice and most likely in a legal gray area – depending on where you got the files from and whether you own the original and so on.

When is the DLC coming? If you support modder Waikuteru on Patreon, you can get access to the Doors of Doom Early Access right now. Otherwise, the normal version will go online for the public on June 29th. You can find many more such projects here:

The Zelda BotW sequel aka Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 or whatever the sequel is called has unfortunately been postponed to the first half of 2023. So it will be quite a while before Nintendo finally officially serves up new fodder for us Zelda fans. That’s where mods like this come in handy.

What do you think of the Doors of Doom? What do you think of such homemade fan DLCs in general?
