The life of Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, Empress of Austria, has always fired the imagination of film and series makers. The best known is probably the popular actress Romy Schneider from the Ernst Marischka films as Sissi. But lately more and more broadcasters want to cut a slice of Sisi – now in September 2022 also Netflix with the series The Empress.
If someone says Sissi, then most people, maybe even the younger ones, immediately have an image in mind: that of the beautiful Romy Schneider, who played the role of Elisabeth von Austria-Hungary ( actually nicknamed Sisi) suffered and fought. Even today, the regular screening of the three films “Sissi”, “Sissi – The Young Empress” and “Sissi – Fateful Years of an Empress” has a long tradition. Of course, it is also lovely to watch the then acting darlings Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Böhm. That the historical events took a backseat in favor of the love story…well.

The story of Empress Elisabeth has inspired all kinds of series makers, especially in recent times, to tackle the work again and give it a modern touch. The result was, among other things, the RTL production Sisi in 2021, which mainly scored with all kinds of sex and less with content. Another 2021 production will be the Netflix production The Empress, which now has a date – you can surrender to the six-part series from September 29, 2022. It remains to be seen whether it will primarily focus on romantic drama or whether historical details will also be in the limelight.
Speaking of Sissi (who has only been called Sissi since the Marischka films, and Sisi before that) and film adaptations. Because there isn’t enough new food with the RTL and Netflix series, you can also watch the films “Corsage” or “Sisi and I”. They just got freshly made too.
