Call of the Wild: The Angler lets us go fishing in an open world

I admit it. I like fishing in video games. As soon as I discover a corresponding minigame somewhere, I’m the first to cast the virtual rod. And I’ve also tried one or the other Wii title from the genre with the appropriate plastic stick, although most of them were disappointing in terms of quality. To be honest, there was only one thing I really missed about Horizon Forbidden West this year. Namely a fishing mini-game.

But it is precisely this gap that now seems evident Call of the Wild: The Angler to fill. No, this isn’t fishing DLC for Aloy’s latest adventure, but a standalone game that, unsurprisingly, is all about fishing. And not just anywhere, but in an open world in which we can apparently choose where we want to drag fish out of the water.

Tobias Veltin

Tobi doesn’t know exactly which title started his fascination with fishing in games. But he has a guess. Because in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time he often hung out for hours at the fishing pond instead of saving Hyrule from impending doom.

Chic open world, co-op for up to 12 players

The announcement trailer linked above already shows the obvious advantages of the title. Because similar to the indirect predecessor the Hunter: Call of the Wild, we roam through pretty secluded-looking landscapes, which at least have an almost calming effect on me. According to the press release sent out, The Angler is about becoming a master angler, which should work both alone and in co-op for up to 12 (!) players.

The game world can be explored either on foot, by boat or jeep, and unsurprisingly there will be a variety of fish species and fishing equipment.

In any case, the trailer speaks to me enormously and I’m looking forward to it when more information about the game is revealed. Call of the Wild: The Angler has so far only been announced for the PC and does not yet have a specific release date. However, console versions will definitely follow developer Avalanche.

How do you like the first trailer for Call of the Wild: The Angler?
