Finally: Crossplay between Epic Games and Steam is on the way

PC gamers will soon no longer have to choose between Steam and Epic Games, as a new tool allows developers to integrate cross-functionality between the two platforms into their games.

Steam vs Epic Games? This comparison will soon be obsolete

Epic Games gives the studios the tools for this and wants to ensure that the different communities can finally be brought together.

“To reach all audiences, developers need to port their titles to multiple stores and platforms by setting up different services and account systems for each store,” Epic Games said in one blog post.

“Because these services are not interoperable, players cannot play with friends who have purchased the same game from different retailers even though they own the same game.”

“Today we’re introducing a new crossplay tool for game developers – first for PC. This service is the first in a series of plug-and-play crossplay services that offer developers everything they need to develop their game and to connect their community across platforms and stores.”

The PC tool is just the beginning

The tool overlays the Epic online service, merging the friend lists of the two platforms.

As Epic Games itself writes in the post, this merger is worth it for both platforms because “players who can team up with their friends have more fun and play more often.”

Crossplay tools, which also integrate the console players, should follow a little later. According to Epic Games, if you already want to try the PC tool, you need to download the Epic Online Services SDK 1.15 and install the tool in the developer portal configure.
