Open The Gates on Steam: Build mighty fortresses with side scrolling

from Alexander Ney
The forthcoming medieval city-builder Open The Gates relies on genre-typical mechanics, but makes them a matter of perspective. Because the settlements with castles, prisons and mills are built here in a picturesque 2D side view – under the mocking comments of bizarre opponents.

Steam has a whole range of building games that focus on building a medieval settlement. This also includes Open The Gates, which is still in development, but one thing makes the action real-time strategy game decisively different: It turns all genre conventions “on their side”, i.e. it chooses a 2D side view for building settlements. In addition, Open the Gates does not provide the players with a praising advisor, but exposes them to the (entertaining) mockery of weird adversaries. All of this is already allowed within the framework of a playable demo be savored – the title should appear in October 2022.

Building castles against hand-painted backgrounds

In Open The Gates, an unnamed emperor has lost control of his empire. That’s why he tells the player to break new ground and – step by step – build a new empire. The settlement, which is tiny at the beginning, grows over time to include inns, prisons and hospitals, while lumber camps and quarries are built nearby to supply the budding metropolis with resources. The administrative tasks are particularly complex, because the problems of a medieval settlement not only include questions of nutrition, illnesses or crime, but also rats, major fires and sieges. The real-time battles are largely automatic, with the typical player armies being selected and directed using the mouse. According to the developer, in the final version the sub-units of the armies will have individual special abilities.

Once a country’s regent has been defeated, the game progresses linearly to the next level. Overall, Open The Gates is said to contain 26 levels and several different biomes, including “green fields, hot deserts and volcanic craters”. A special feature of the game is said to be that armies can be transported between islands in hot air balloons. By the way, balloons are also said to be good as a weapon if they are shot down by archers over the target area with the appropriate load.
