You only see an extreme Pay2Win mechanism of Diablo Immortal when you have already paid

Ever since the release, new Pay2Win accusations have surfaced and Diablo Immortal’s image has suffered greatly. However, a hitherto little-known mechanic takes it to the extreme: Gem Resonance. MyMMO takes a closer look at the mechanics.

The essentials in brief:

• With Diablo Immortal, the action RPG series went to mobile phones and celebrated a strong release with many players.
• However, testers and players were already concerned in advance: Many mechanics in the game seem to result in an overflowing Pay2Win system.
• After the release, it became clear: Diablo Immortal gives you many opportunities to buy powerful benefits with real money. However, one extreme mechanic is only now becoming well known: Gem Resonance.

Gem Resonance takes Pay2Win to a new level

What does Gem Resonance bring? The mechanics allow the controversial Legendary Gems to be further improved and expanded. You then have access to a whole new menu via the “Master Jeweler” merchant, which promises further strong bonuses.

However, this menu only appears if you have the following items:

• Legendary Gem at Rank 10
• Legendary item at Rank 6
• Waking Echo Real Money Item

This item combination can be “awakened” with it. This gives you a direct boost to the legendary effect of the equipment item. The Awakened effect on the Necromancer’s shoulder gear, “Rottenspur”, immediately gives 10% more damage to “Corpse Explosion”.

The bonus is in addition to the normal Legendary effect and is different for each Legendary. Even before the release, the “Awakening” caused a stir. But an additional mechanism pushes it to the extreme.

Because the whole thing is closely interwoven with the Legendary Gems. Once you have a rank 10 stone, other Legendaries can be slotted into that stone, unlocking extra bonuses. These bonuses tie right in with the gem’s perks, adding yet another powerful boost to your build.

The “Awakening” takes Pay2Win and your character to a new level:

• The resonance goes up, which increases all attributes in your build
• Battle rating goes up
• The gemstone effect is enhanced
• More effects by inserting gems

The awakened effect is then considered an upgrade and can be transferred to other equipment.

Extra menu only appears when you pay for something

How does this work? As a Free2Play player, Gem Resonance is theoretically achievable, save for the Awakening Echo item. However, you need good luck with Legendary Gems or be adept at trading platinum.

Because in order to get the legendary gems to a new rank, you need the same gem again and also gem power, which you primarily get by dismantling legendary gems. However, the gem does not have to have the same number of stars.

The ?/5-star gems, which you can only get from Legendary Emblems, get really expensive. To upgrade to rank 10, you need the gem you want to upgrade again: once to rank 3 and twice to rank 5. You must also upgrade these items with gems and gem power beforehand.

Once the gem is Rank 10, it can be upgraded further via the Gem Resonance menu. For this you need very specific legendary gems, which must also be at rank 5 or 10 again, for further bonuses. These are different for each Legendary Gem.

Before that, however, you must upgrade the gem with the item “Awakening Echo”. This costs around 15 euros and unlocks the menu mentioned above at the master jeweler.

Over €1,000 for the complete package

What does this cost? Using the probabilities that Diablo Immortal shows for Legendary Gems, let’s try to estimate the cost of a complete awakened item:

• Find and upgrade Legendary
• Buy Waking Echo
  • Real money shop: approx. €15
• Find ?/5 Gem (4.5%)
  • Around 20 Legendary Emblems: approx. €20
• 20 ?/5 gems to upgrade
  • Around 400 Legendary Emblems: approx. €500
• 12 ?/5 gems for Gem Resonance
  • Requires certain gems: €500 estimated

If you are lucky enough to match the given probabilities, you will still easily need €1000 to get a ?/5 star on rank 10 and achieve the maximum resonance.

The procedure is much more favorable for the weaker 1-star and 2-star gemstones. But with the ?/5 star gems you can spend an awful lot before the maximum bonuses are reached.

If you then want to fish for the big fish and go all out for a 5/5 star gem, then it gets really expensive. Streamer Quin69 put €15,000 into the game before he got the 5/5 Star Gem he was looking for. After that, the Twitch streamer deleted his character.

Diablo Immortal has a lot to offer Free2Play players. If you just want to play a little Diablo and judge demons on your phone, then the action RPG will keep you busy for hours.

However, the mobile cracker also has plenty of opportunities to increase your power with real money. Players with high expectations only have to reach for their wallets to secure the big numbers and bonuses.
