DICE wants to be “proud of Battlefield 2042”.

Will work on Battlefield 2042 be stopped? That's what Electronic Arts says!

There was a time when DICE was working on other, smaller projects alongside the Battlefield series, such as the ever-popular Mirror’s Edge. Unfortunately, those times are now over, like General Manager Rebecka Coutaz in one go Interview with GamesIndustry.biz reveals. When asked if projects like Mirror’s Edge are now a lower priority for the studio, Coutaz replied:

“Absolutely. We’re just focusing on Battlefield 2042 (buy now €31.99). We don’t have time for anything else and that’s what we want to do. In three years, we want to be the first-person shooter powerhouse that DICE deserves, and that’s what we’re aiming for.”

No more Mirror’s Edge from DICE

Since DICE was acquired by EA in 2006, the studio has worked almost exclusively on the Battlefield series and other first-person shooters such as Star Wars Battlefront and Medal of Honor. However, the studio has dabbled in other projects in the past , like the aforementioned Mirror’s Edge, and achieved some success with it. However, the 2016 sequel Mirror’s Edge Catalyst failed to capture the charm of the 2008 original, and as a result it was pretty much forgotten.

While it’s a bit of a shame that DICE no longer wants to follow other games, at least their involvement in Battlefield 2042 could ensure that the title can still win the hearts of players. Coutaz herself explains that her new Battlefield spin-off didn’t live up to fans’ expectations, which must have been quite a disappointment for the team:

“We’re celebrating 30 years as a studio but also 20 years of Battlefield and we have players that have been with us for 20 years and disappointing them… it’s really hard for us. I want the team to be really proud of Battlefield 2042 can be. That’s what they want, and that’s where their heart and passion is. We want to be really, really proud of DICE.”
