Pokémon Go: While other pandemic bonuses go, long-distance raids will remain

Pokemon Go developers are known for giving and then taking from players. That’s not necessarily the fine art of community maintenance. However, the Niantic people emphasize to Eurogamer that long-distance raids remain in the game – and that on-site raids should become more attractive.

The developers of Pokémon Go have been hinting for months that they want to return to the original game concept after the great pandemic. That’s why they tried Interaction radius with PokéStops reduced again, which was prevented due to community outcry. And that’s why they try with the Adjustments to the Smoke item to move the players back to the door when the avatar stands still. Another feature of the pandemic era is the concept of long-distance raids. Will they be taken away from the players as well? Game Director Michael Steranka emphasized in an interview with Eurogamerthat there are currently no plans to remove long-distance raids.

Long-distance raids may not be canceled, but…

Of course, Steranka cannot rule out that this attitude will change in the future. But the focus is on making local raiding more attractive again: “Our approach will generally be to introduce new functions and features to encourage playing together, rather than discontinuing the remote raiding that we know about that the players have grown fond of them over the past two years.”

However, the Pokémon Go trainers have already had to accept an adjustment that has made long-distance raids less attractive: The price of the 3-pack of long-distance raid passes in the in-game shop has been increased from 250 Poké coins to 300, so there is no longer any savings in comparison to purchase a single Remote Raid Pass. We don’t want to accuse Niantic of anything, but it is conceivable that the price adjustment screw will be turned even further in the future with regard to the attractiveness of long-distance raids.
