Cubot Pocket: the smallest smartphone of the year?

Cubot Pocket: the smallest smartphone of the year?

from Alexander Ney
Measuring just 4 inches diagonally, the Cubot Pocket is slightly larger than the 17-year-old Nokia 6680. However, it is significantly thinner – and of course it does a lot more. The extremely compact smartphone is primarily aimed at those who (for a long time) are critical of ever-growing devices.

If you have trouble swiping and typing “yourself” on a 6.4-inch display, you could use the new one Cubot Pocket seem like a bad joke. Because the new smartphone from brand owner Shenzhen HuaFuRui will go on sale on June 27th with dimensions that you might be familiar with from 2005. As a reminder, a Nokia 6680 measured 108.4mm x 55.2mm x 20.5mm; the Cubot Pocket is only slightly larger at 119 x 58 x 12.5 millimeters. Such compactness could of course appeal to those who have not changed their smartphone for a long time due to ever larger models. On the other hand, of course, compromises have to be made in terms of performance – the Pocket doesn’t turn the clock back 17 years, but at least three years. Apart from that, Shenzhen HuaFuRui is priced in the entry-level segment with the device, and the Cubot Pocket is currently available for around 160 euros on Amazon and Ebay.

60 Hz display and quad-core processor

A 3,000 mAh battery does its job in the Cubot Pocket, which is charged via USB-C and does justice to the other technical data. The display with Full HD resolution offers a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and the processor used is a Unisoc T310 – consisting of three ARM Cortex-A55 cores and one A75 core – without 5G support. However, the device supports the third-generation mobile communications standard (LTE), and the pocket is also a dual-SIM cell phone. But: The second SIM card may be replaced by a MicroSD card extension of the 64 gigabyte mass memory; accordingly, the pocket has a hybrid slot.

According to the data sheet, the photo and video quality of the Pocket is rather modest. The front camera of the Pocket delivers 5 megapixels and the rear 16 megapixels. On the other hand, contactless payment via Google Pay, for example, is possible with the pocket cell phone, while it sends greetings back to 2016 with Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi 4 in dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). The operating system is Android in the unchanged version 11 from 2020. The little one from Shenzen certainly doesn’t deserve the title “small but mighty” due to the outdated technology and the slightly too high price. It remains to be seen whether the Chinese company will enter further compact cell phones and then argue more convincingly.
