Final Fantasy 16: Oh! No open world – for a more epic story!
Are you one of those gamers who always see an open game world with a good portion of skepticism – and then prefer games that don’t offer an open world? Then Final Fantasy 16 will offer you exactly the right thing: no open world, so that the epic story can be staged even more grippingly.
The best news from the quasi-E3 of 2022 isn’t necessarily that Final Fantasy 16 won’t be released in 2022 anymore. But that Final Fantasy 16 will not offer an open world, but rather smaller areas in which the epic and global story will be told in a relatively stringent manner. Think Witcher 1 and 2. Or think Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Most fans of the JRPG series probably assumed that the team around game producer Naoki Yoshida was working on an open game world and thus following the current RPG trend. But that’s not the case, as Yoshida explains in an interview with the writers at IGN.
No open game world, but more immersion with the story
“We have found in our extensive user research”, Yoshi-P told IGN“that many of the younger generation of gamers have never played a Final Fantasy or have no interest in the series. In order to create a game that can excite not only our regular fans, but also this new generation, we have played many games ourselves , and yes, in [Final Fantasy 16] you will find inspiration from current triple-A open-world RPGs”.
The “open world” of Final Fantasy 15 will probably also be remembered by developers and fans alike. It wasn’t particularly big and relatively limited, especially in the first part of the game. However, as soon as one could enter all areas of Lucis before leaving for Altissia, the desert of the areas of Leide, Duscae and Cleigne was revealed to the player. There were a lot of monsters, but little life and not many side quests that would have enhanced the open-world feeling in any way.
“In order to tell a story that spans the globe and beyond, we chose to avoid an open-world design that would confine us to a single open space, and instead opted for an independent, zone-based game design that can give players a better sense of a truly “global” dimension.” We are very curious. However, FFXVI will not be playable until 2023.
