The new PS Plus subscription service models were recently launched. There is a whopping load of bonus games available for all Extra and Premium members and we want to take this opportunity to recommend titles that you should definitely catch up on. Observer is a wonderfully dark cyberpunk thriller and the PS5 version System Redux, which contains new side stories in addition to graphical upgrades, can now be played with Extra and Premium.

Horror thriller in a cyberpunk setting

It’s all about this: In Observer, you take on the role of “neural detective” Daniel Lazarski, who after a long radio silence receives a disturbing phone call from his son Adam. When Lazarski investigates, he finds a headless corpse with an unknown identity in Adam’s run-down apartment.

Can it get any worse? Yes. Shortly thereafter, the apartment complex in which the apartment is located is completely sealed off in a lockdown. So the detective is trapped and starts the search for the killer.

The situation is not only tense because of the killer – Lazarski’s relationship with the local residents is also a difficult one. In the dystopian future version of Kraków, the people who live in this apartment complex – or in some cases rather just vegetate – were assigned to the lower class by the authorities. Addicted to modern day drugs or holograms, they have little chance of escaping their depressing existence.

Lazarski, on the other hand, is part of the Observers, a police force specially set up to control people like this by hacking into their minds. No wonder that he encounters rejection and distrust in conversations, if the door is even opened for him. By the way, if you think this sounds more like a thriller than a horror, don’t worry. The settings are extremely dark and you also get to deal with some kind of monster.

This is how Observer plays

Observer is a horror thriller that also relies heavily on detective work with futuristic methods when it comes to game mechanics. We explore, have conversations, but can also use various special views that reveal hidden things and allow us to analyze objects better.

But the most exciting thing is that we can even hack into the minds of the dead to find out what happened to them – even if these worlds of thought are often chaotic and broken; not to say dangerous.

Samara Summer

I wouldn’t call Observer a pure horror game, since the title relies heavily on the SciFi crime thriller component. Nevertheless, the game was scarier for me than many other offshoots of the horror genre. I wander through the dirty and in need of repair corridors, which present themselves as a claustrophobic labyrinth with the broken or makeshift tech equipment. The animosity is palpable.

But not only that: the environment also reflects the desolation and hopelessness into which the characters have drifted. The horror consists in a feeling of uneasiness, which also builds up because I often have to make moral decisions that I feel can only lose.

Daniel Lazarski works quite well as an ambivalent protagonist. A disaffected cop fits the setting perfectly. I found the occasionally difficult orientation and a few frustrating sneak passages annoying, but all in all, immersing myself in the morbid world of the future gave me eerily beautiful hours.
