Rise of Piracy coming soon to Steam: Pirate action with RTS elements from solo developer

from Thilo Bayer
Anyone interested in pirate adventures will most likely find Rise of Piracy in Early Access on Steam in 2022. In the following, we present what an individual developer would like to achieve.

The variety of game projects on platforms like Steam is part of the fascination of the current PC game market. Even more fascinating are 1-developer projects.

Rise of Piracy introduced

Behind the pirate adventure Rise of Piracy, which is still in 2022 to start in Steam Early Access, is also only a single developer. The plans are all the more astonishing: Rise of Piracy should be nothing less than the “perfect mix of action, adventure and RTS”. You begin your journey as a humble captain of a small ship and, at best, end up commanding a menacing fleet. The player decides how to follow this path: “Trade, fight, recruit, grow, loot, ally, destroy and conquer”: Everything is possible and allowed.

He started development in 2018, he writes on Steam. Most systems are already completed. However, it is a “big task” to develop a captivating single-player campaign with exciting battles and to add multiplayer modes. The core game mechanics are also “complicated”. Rise of Piracy has a strong focus on progression and growth. At the beginning you fulfill missions and find treasures to expand your economic strength and relationships with other factions. Optionally, you can also fight and board or sink other games – but piracy is optional. If you want to conquer islands, you need a large fleet with the appropriate crew. In this way, even large colonial fleets can be defeated at some point.

It promises “hundreds of handcrafted environments” rather than procedural worlds. Environments and buildings should be fully destructible. If you don’t want to be a pirate, you can trade over 200 commodities worldwide. This requires ports with special trade routes and merchant ships to maximize transport potential. An in-depth diplomacy system helps build relationships with other factions and go to war if necessary. Changing the balance of power should also affect warship activity and block trade routes. In order to build up your own fortune, you can trade, wage war, hunt for bounties or search for hidden treasures.

In the final game, over 30 playable ships from the 1600s to 1900s should be available. The necessary crew members for the fleet can be hired in the taverns, for example to board enemy ships or conquer islands. But be careful: Hostile actions are said to have serious consequences for the factions – fleets of pirate hunters are constantly on the lookout for bounty. The level of difficulty of the campaign should increase dynamically and thus remain challenging, no matter how strong the players become.
