Snakebyte BT Headset:Adapt 5 - Test: Small headphone adapter, big effect

A cheap adapter that connects Bluetooth headsets to the PS5 and saves you a place on the console for USB devices.

Anyone who would like to connect audio devices to their PlayStation via Bluetooth knows that this is not as easy as it could be. Since Sony blocks access for third parties, you have to resort to external solutions for this problem. Much to the delight of third-party providers such as Snakebyte, who want to fill precisely these gaps with the BT Headset:Adapt 5. Is it worth 20 euros for it?

The BT Headset:Adapt 5 is effectively a small adapter for your DualSense controller, which you plug into the 3.5mm jack on your pad. The device is powered by its internal battery, which can be charged via a USB cable. So it doesn’t suck your controller empty. However, the included 20 cm long USB cable (USB-A to USB-C) is extremely short in practice and is not very helpful.

Broadcast only to you

On the adapter you have an LED as a status indicator and four buttons. You can use it to mute the sound, put the adapter into pairing mode, and increase and decrease the volume. Since the BT Headset:Adapt 5 uses a three-pole connector to connect to the controller, you cannot use the microphone on your headset; instead, you have to use the microphone integrated in the DualSense to speak. Not the best solution if you want to communicate a lot with others and value good quality. If you primarily want to hear things, it doesn’t matter that much.

The adapter on the DualSense controller.

The adapter normally sits sensibly in the 3.5mm connection of the DualSense and does not interfere with the usual movements. It only detaches slightly from the connection after a while if you keep pressing the side buttons. In practice, the constant adjustment of the volume is rather rare, although the volume controls on the headset don’t work with it, but on the whole it wasn’t a big problem for me. A slightly better holder wouldn’t have hurt anyway, so that that device is completely wobble-free. At the same time, the adapter is compatible with third-party controllers.

The processing quality is good, but given the price of 20 euros, you shouldn’t expect high-end material. The adapter is made of plastic and feels accordingly. But everything is built in neatly and the four buttons give you feedback with an audible click when you press them.

Hassle-free pairing with multiple devices

The coupling with different audio devices works without any problems. Simply go into pairing mode, start pairing on the corresponding device and the connection should be established within seconds. After a few minutes of inactivity, the adapter turns off automatically to save power. Snakebyte specifies the runtime as up to 18 hours. A more realistic value is around 15 hours, after around two hours the adapter is recharged.

You connect it via the headset connection.

Aside from the PlayStation 5, thanks to Bluetooth 5.0 you can also connect your smartphone to it to make phone calls, use music apps or WhatsApp while playing. If the worst comes to the worst, you can use the mute button on the BT Headset:Adapt 5 to switch off the game sound so that it no longer disturbs the call. Or while listening to music.

Snakebyte BT Headset:Adapt 5 Review – Conclusion

Ultimately, the question is: do you need the BT Headset:Adapt 5? It depends. Typically, third-party wireless PlayStation headsets rely on a USB dongle. With the BT Headset:Adapt 5, you save the aforementioned space in the USB slot, since you are no longer dependent on the dongle. So if you absolutely need a free USB slot on your PlayStation 5, you might consider purchasing the BT Headset:Adapt 5. It does its job well, also connects to another device and transmits the sound well and reliably to the wireless headset. The overall construction could be a bit more stable, but for 20 euros you get a reasonable quality that serves its purpose. No more and no less.
