Quickly summon a spirit in Elden Ring? This was originally intended to be annoyingly complicated
Helpful spirits that aid us in battle are among the biggest gameplay innovations of the Elden Ring compared to the Soulsborne games. Once we’ve obtained the necessary bell, we can easily ring it in most places by equipping the appropriate Spirit Ash. This is a relatively lean and practical system, but it wasn’t always planned that way.
Video shows designs using Stesle, Consumeables and Talisman
It’s all about this: In a video, dataminer Sekiro Dubi shows which other variants for the necromancy FromSoftware has experimented with in the course of development. Previous designs worked very differently and would certainly have negatively impacted the usability of the game mechanics.
Stele for very special spirits: First of all, as we see in the video, it was planned that in order to summon a spirit we have to interact with stelae. There would then have been stone monuments tied to very specific helpers. For example, the one we see is associated with the spirit of Tiche and wouldn’t work if we were planning to summon the wolves.
By the way, interacting alone would not have been enough to summon Tiche. In addition, we would have had to equip a consumable that is also assigned to the spirit.
But it gets even more complicated. Sekiro Dubi explains:
If this system seems confusing to you, wait until you see the second version.

Stele, plus talisman and consumable item: In this variant, a stele would also have been necessary for the interaction. This time, however, we would not only have summoned a special spirit, but had the choice between up to eight different ones. In order to get the desired one, however, we would first have to equip a corresponding talisman, for example the lone wolf talisman.
But that still wouldn’t have been enough. In addition, the appropriate consumable item would have had to be equipped in this case as well. It remains questionable how players would have received the items. Either way, Sekiro Dubi’s conclusion is:
It was convoluted and probably difficult to get right in the heat of the moment.

So if you like to rely on your ghosts in battle – whether as active helpers or just to distract the enemies – you can be happy that FromSoftware has revised the system again. The multiplayer mechanics, on the other hand, are even more complicated in the finished game than in most other games.
What do you think of the old summoning systems? Are you glad we got a revised version?
