Sonic Origins: Developers unhappy about current status

The developer of Sonic Origins, Simon Thomley, is unhappy about the state of the game collection and blames SEGA after the bumpy start.

Simon Thomley, the founder of Headcannon, the co-development studio for Sonic Origins, issued a longer statement via Twitter:

He said on Twitter: “This is frustrating. I’m not going to lie and say there weren’t any problems in what we gave Sega, but what’s in Origins isn’t what we gave away either. The integration has introduced some wild bugs that by conventional logic one would assume we were responsible for, but many of them are not.”

“As for Origins, we were outsiders developing a separate project that was then turned into something completely different. We knew from the start that there would be a huge time pressure and we worked hard to meet it just to get the project made and released.”

“Again, I can take responsibility for my mistakes and those of my team, and there have been a few. Some actual errors, some overlooked, some rushed, some things we noticed but weren’t allowed to correct towards the end. It’s not perfect at all and some of it is ours. It’s complicated.”

“I’m very proud of my team for their performance under this pressure, but each of us is very unhappy with the state of Origins and even the Sonic 3 component. We weren’t too keen on the pre-filing state either, but a lot was out of our control.”

“We asked for major corrections just prior to filing but were denied due to filing and approval regulations. We asked early and repeatedly for delays but were told it was not possible. We’ve offered to come back for post-release fixes and updates – we don’t yet know if that will happen.”

“We want these issues to be addressed. We gave a lot of feedback both during and after development of Origins and the Sonic 3 integration. We did a lot of the work after we left to fix things, support Sega, and prepare for future updates.”

“I have to apologize for not raising this earlier, but you have to understand – many things of this nature are considered ‘unprofessional’ and can hurt our relationship with Sega, which means there are no Origins updates and no more 2D Pixel Sonic games from us.”

“Then why am I talking about this now? Well, there’s just too much research out there about things that may or may not be related to us, and I don’t want to sit back in silence while people ask why and how something happened to a product they had such high hopes for and invested money.”

“I hear you, Headcannon hears you. We wanted this to be right then and now. There is so much that you will never know or understand about this type of work, but you should know and understand that we do our best, even when it hurts us, and that we care about our work and about Sonic.”
