‘This looks better than the DLC tracks’: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe modder inspires with Sonic course

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already has a lot of tracks, a modder built another one himself.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already has a lot of tracks, a modder built another one himself.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be supplied with new tracks until the end of 2023, the DLC booster track pass makes it possible. The first course wave rolled onto the switch in March 2022, and there is no date yet for the second route package.

As much as I like to keep racing through the switch mega-seller, I’m slowly but surely longing for new courses for the fun racer. And that’s why I was amazed when I recently read about the video by YouTuber and Nintendo modder 64iOS stumbled.

Because what he presented there as a self-made course, I thought at first for a leak of a new official track for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The graphic quality is so similar to that of the base game that you basically cannot tell it apart. And that I now have the wish to be able to drive this route myself in the future.

Tobias Veltin

Although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Tobi’s absolute favorite fun racer, he also has a general weakness for the subgenre. Accordingly, he also liked to play the Sonic fun racers, he wouldn’t think a crossover of the two series would be wrong – it already worked with the Olympic Games titles.

What kind of route is that anyway?

64iOS quickly grabbed the Green Hill Zone from the Sonic games and adapted it for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with its cozy palm trees, loopings and corkscrews as well as the acceleration fields. The playable character here is, of course, the blue hedgehog himself, who doesn’t sit in a kart, but dashes across the track on foot.

There are also lots of cool details to see and hear in the video, including the Pixel Sonic glider and all of the music entertainment. Check out this course artwork here:

And a number of others are as enthusiastic as I am, at least that’s what the comments under the video show. User Cordell Riemer writes: “This mod makes me want Sonic in Mario Kart even more” and Isaiah Frias says: “This mod looks better than the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC”.

Background: Before the launch of the first DLC wave, there had been discussions about possible graphics downgrades, because the additional courses do not visually correspond to the quality of the main game courses in all details. You can read in my review of the first DLC package for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that this doesn’t really bother you:

In any case, the route from 64iOS would look great in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe course, both visually and probably also in terms of play, but the chances of us getting a Sonic course in one of the DLC packages are likely to be rather poor. Finally, Team Sonic Racing has its own fun racer with the iconic hedgehog.

Finally, the important note: The track from the video is a modded and thus self-created track for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which CANNOT be downloaded or played officially for the game. That’s a pity, but we probably won’t have to wait too long for the “real” supply of slopes.

What do you think of the Sonic course?
