Asus has introduced a second variant of the ROG Thor Platinum II that can deliver 1,200 watts. Technically, the new power supply largely corresponds to the version already available. The new 16-pin connector for graphics cards is also included again.

With the new graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, which are due to be launched by the end of the year as the Radeon RX 7000 and Geforce RTX 4000 respectively, there will also be a new power connector. On the one hand, the new 16-pin connection makes graphics cards with a TDP of up to 600 watts possible, but on the other hand, it also requires suitable adapters or new power supplies that already have the new connection ex works.

200 watts extra

The ROG Thor 1200W Platinum II recently introduced by Asus takes a middle course. As with the already available ROG Thor Platinum II with 1,000 watts, the power supply has eight conventional 8-pin sockets for supplying processors and graphics cards. According to Asus, a suitable adapter that can supply a graphics card with 600 watts is also included for the next graphics card generation.

The technical data of the new power supply largely correspond to the already available 1,000 watt model. Asus once again advertises a volume certification according to Lambda A++, a platinum rating and a built-in OLED display as well as RGB lighting.

The dimensions of the ATX power supply remain the same: the ROG Thor Platinum II will again be 190 mm long and rely on identical cooling with a 135 mm fan. The additional 200 watts of power therefore also increase the volume. According to Cybenetics, the new power supply achieves 14.75 dB(A), whereas the 1,000 watt version only achieves 11.39 dB(A).

This means that the new ROG Thor Platinum II currently has a significant surcharge compared to the 1,000 watt power supply: it is currently sold for just under 345 euros.
