Ghostbusters: Legacy: Sequel already has release date, new setting
Ghostbusters: Legacy has been able to delight viewers with plenty of nostalgia in 2021. Those responsible at Sony definitely want to build on this success, which is why a sequel got the green light. When is the Legacy sequel coming out?
Anyone who thought that the Ghostbusters brand would disappear again after the comeback in 2021 has cut it: A sequel to the SciFi strip is already in the works! After the film was initially postponed for a long time due to the pandemic and finally only landed in cinemas worldwide in limited capacity, it was initially uncertain whether there would be a sequel. But it will – the official release date promises a long wait.

Release date and setting of the new Ghostbusters movie
The Ghostbusters sequel won’t hit theaters until December 2023. The official Ghostbusters Twitter account has also confirmed this information. Details about the cast and the story are not yet available, but the setting is now probably certain: As the post-credits scene with the Ecto-1 in New York indicated, the location in the next film is no longer Oklahoma. The return of Ghostbuster Winston from the original films also seems pretty certain.
Why is Ghostbusters: Legacy getting a sequel?
For 27 years it was quiet on the screen about the Ghostbusters: After Ghostbusters 2 in 1989, the brand only returned to the cinemas in 2016 – with a cast of female Ghostbusters. The film was a financial flop, however, and plans for a possible sequel were shelved, and the female cast was met with rave reviews. While Ghostbuster: Legacy’s box office wasn’t a smash due to the pandemic either, the film still paid dividends via video-on-demand and streaming.
