from Norman Wittkopf
The latest network storage model from Synology’s compact Plus series relies on Ryzen instead of Celeron, ECC RAM and a PCI-E expansion slot compared to its predecessor.

Like the previous DS1520+, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+, which is intended for private and professional applications alike, continues to rely on five bays for 3.5 and 2.5 drives with SATA 6 Gb/s connection as well as hot-swap capability and also offers on the connection side four Gigabit-LAN as well as two each USB-A 3.0, eSATA and M.2/M-Key (2280). The latter enables the storage performance to be accelerated even further via the SSD cache.

Meanwhile, an AMD Ryzen Embedded R1600 in 14 nm production with two cores and four threads at up to 3.10 GHz works inside, which is supported ex works by 8 GiByte DDR4 ECC RAM as SO-DIMM, whereby here can be expanded up to 32 GiByte. Two 92 mm fans ensure cooling under load. Overall, the DiskStation DS1522+ in the existing housing has dimensions of 230 x 166 x 223 mm (W x H x D) with a weight of 2.7 kilograms and should therefore also be suitable for many installation locations.

Meanwhile, there’s also a 10GbE upgrade option via PCI-E expansion and scalability for 10 additional drives via two DX517 expansion units also available as an option. On the software side, the DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1 provides data management functions, file sharing and Co., which automatically backs up data after setup and makes it available on other devices, including cloud services. Meanwhile, the DiskStation DS1522+ can also function as a full video management system with support for up to 40 cameras. The new release is to be available immediately at a suggested retail price of $699.99 before taxes, with the listings in the PCGH price comparison showing the basic configuration start from 759 euros.
