This survival strategy hit has captivated me for years and will soon be available on PS4 and Xbox One as well

RimWorld is finally coming to consoles.

RimWorld is finally coming to consoles.

Since the Early Access start a good six years ago, RimWorld has been inspiring with its special mix of science fiction setting, survival mechanics and strategic base building, spiced up with a story generator that is so rarely seen.

It’s not for nothing that our colleagues at GameStar have given the game a big boost 89 on test given. It’s all the more gratifying that we’ll soon be able to play this PC hit on consoles as well, as a Console Edition announcement trailer reveals:

New RimWorld Trailer Announces Survival City Builder for Xbox One and PS4

When will RimWorld Console Edition be released? The release is for PS4 and Xbox One July 29, 2022 dated. So it won’t be long before we can manage our colonies from the couch.

How about DLCs? If you want to have the Royale DLC with you on PS4 or Xbox One, you shouldn’t go for the normal Console Edition, but for the Digital Deluxe version, which also grants access three days earlier.

Too much RimWorld is not possible

What is RimWorld game? The developers at Ludeon Studios describe RimWorld as a “sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent narrator AI”. Dwarf Fortress, Firefly and Dune served as inspirations.

RimWorld is one of those games that you either don’t like or completely lose. Appearances can be deceiving, but behind the simplified look and randomly generated worlds lies a deep gameplay that challenges and motivates you in equal measure.

For example, keeping a cannibal colonist happy isn’t all that easy when you’re running out of “food,” which may well end up in taking your frustration out on others. If the entire colony then perishes, you still want to try again and do better.

I would be lying if I denied my intermittent dependency on RimWorld. Because since RimWorld started in Early Access on Steam in 2016, I’ve been returning regularly with a colony to strange and dangerous planets – unspectacular graphics or not.

It’s not even about successfully escaping the planet. I’m just always excited to see what kind of stories the diverse characters will lead to this time: affairs, heroic deeds in the fight against alien creatures despite amputation, prisoners who we first successfully converted only to later succumb to madness and eradicate everything – RimWorld is wonderfully chaotic, unpredictable and therefore unique.

So with the Console Edition I get another incentive to expose myself to the crazy fight for survival again and again. The only question that remains is whether the controls are well implemented. But I’ll find out on July 29th.

What do you think of RimWorld? Do you already know the game from the PC? Are you interested in such a building game at all on consoles? Write me your opinion in the comments.
