In the most spectacular attack in Elden Ring, we are secretly pursued by an underground horse

For once, Elden Ring’s “Most Spectacular Attack” isn’t about Malenia. While she has some notable and powerful attacks, in our opinion the most impressive boss attack in the game is Radahn’s transition to the second phase. The final boss rises into the sky at lightning speed and disappears for a moment, only to then rush down on us as a fiery comet while the sky takes on a new color. A pretty cool but also deadly attack.

Comet attack and underground horse

It’s all about this: There is one heartbreaking fact about Radahn, the boss of Red Mane Castle: he can only ride his rickety horse Leonard, which is far too small, by overcoming gravity – and it is precisely this little Hottehü that is the key to Radahn’s most violent attack, his comet attack. Dataminer Zullie the Witch found that out. A video gives us the answer to how this spectacular move works.

Radahn’s attack is not only so nasty because it deals extremely high damage and kills all players in one hit, but also because it is homing. So if you don’t yet know that the boss is in the sky after he simply disappeared, you will probably be surprised by his impact and killed immediately.

But how does Radahn actually know where we are? Zullie provides the answer: The boss climbs about 262m high, but before that he slams his little horse into the underground, so that Leonard disappears completely into it. In the heat of the moment and because it happens so quickly, most players may have missed this detail. But that, as Zullie reveals, is the key.

When Radahn lunges at us from the sky, he actually lunges at Leonard, who is teleported to an underground location beneath our character. Zullie explains that the game uses a trick to make this possible.

From a technical point of view, Radahn and Leonard are a single NPC, which can be split into rider and horse components in certain animations. This is exactly what happens with the comet attack and with his impact, Radahn kills two birds with one stone, so to speak. In fact, he’s not aiming at us at all, but at his trusty steed, which in turn is glued to our heels underground. Clever trick, but it prevents poor Leonard from flying in the night sky.

Did you notice that Radahn doesn’t even take his horse with him for the comet attack? And how do you like the duo Radahn/Leonard in general?
