No, this is not an optical illusion: Here you can see four links in Zelda BotW.

Zelda Breath of the Wild can actually only be played as a pure single player game. But some modders are now changing that. This means that the dream of being able to play Zelda BotW with up to four people at the same time has come true. The whole thing is still suffering from a few teething problems at the moment, but just that it works is already fantastic and stimulates the imagination.

Zelda BotW: Mutliplayer Mod looks really funny

That’s what it’s about: Zelda BotW streamer and speedrunner PointCrow introduces its multiplayer mod for the Nintendo title. That means yes, Zelda Breath of the Wild is now playable in co-op, with four people total. At least if you play Zelda BotW on the PC and want to mess around with mods. Of course, that raises the wildest hopes and makes dreams come true, but there are still a few snags.

This is what it looks like: Figuratively speaking, just seeing four links in one picture makes my head explode. It opens up so many cool possibilities and it just feels like a dream to have four of you doing pranks in Hyrule. Just the idea of what will be possible in this open world with all its systems if we are allowed to roam around in it with several links.

For example, one link can just blow the other three off the mountain. But it’s best to see for yourself, for example in this Twitch video, in which the multiplayer mod was presented:

Those are the problems

The multiplayer mod is far from finished and doesn’t work properly yet. It often doesn’t run at all or crashes. Also, horses, enemy movement, and weapons are out of sync. As a result, it can be very confusing when a Link is riding, but it appears to the other players as if he is not actually riding a horse. Nevertheless, the whole thing is great fun, for example how play hide and seek here.

More streams from PointCrow you can find here. There is more about BotW in these GamePro articles:

When is multiplayer coming? It will probably be a while before everything works smoothly. Two modders are currently said to be working on the project, which is obviously not yet complete. But PointCrow promises that once the mod is complete, it will also be released as a download.

Attention, legal gray area! If you want to use the co-op mode, you need an emulator on the PC or a hacked Nintendo Switch. However, we would tend not to recommend either of these because you could get into trouble with Nintendo, and you might even lose your account and all your purchases. Nintendo is notorious for not being kind to fan projects like this one.
