Apple's toaster is on hold (PCGH-Retro, July 3)

Apple’s toaster is being put on hold – that happened on July 3rd. Every day, PC Games Hardware dares to take a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

…2001: It was all about the new Apple design: the Power Mac G4 Cube. The entire hardware of the Apple computer was in a compact acrylic cube and was cooled without a fan purely by the natural chimney effect (convection) – well thought out, unusually small, refreshingly different and technically quite powerful. The calculator won many awards for its design and was even found in the New York Museum of Modern Art. After the success of the Imac and the other Apple creations that emerged under Steve Jobs’ second management, many expected another hit – but the Cube became a flop: It was more expensive than other G4 Macs, hardly expandable and initially had to be without CD burners get by; not even 150,000 copies were sold, Apple shares lost value. And so the Cube came to an end less than a year after its introduction on July 19, 2000: On July 3, 2001, Apple laid the cube on ice.
