Spain plans to regulate the use of random in-game purchases or loot boxes more closely and ban them completely for minors.

It looks like random in-game purchases or loot boxes will soon no longer be available for purchase by minors in Spain. A new government draft seeks a complete ban on players under the age of 18, as well as more regulation of mechanics overall.

The draft stipulates that games that rely on named mechanics will be obliged to disclose this in the future. There is also a requirement to provide self-exclusion mechanisms and spending limit settings. Violations of the guidelines can result in fines of between 25,000 and 100,000 euros.

In addition, in-game advertising must not encourage the use of the mechanics. While such games can still be advertised in magazines, websites and video game channels, TV advertising is only allowed between 1am and 5am.

While adult players can continue to access loot boxes and random in-game purchases after identification and can benefit from the new regulations, use by minors should be completely prohibited.
