Nothing Phone (1) only with a mid-range chip - the manufacturer explains the decision

from Alexander Ney
After the technical data of the Nothing Phone (1) were recently leaked, Nothing co-founder Carl Pei has now officially confirmed that the smartphone will be based on an adapted version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. Pei defended the use of the mid-range chip to Input Mag – and explained Qualcomm’s further adjustments to the SoC.

The RootMyGalaxy website recently had the Specifications of the Nothing Phone (1) leaked, however, the publication had not previously attracted attention by publishing many correct leaks. Confirmed to Input Mag However, Nothing co-founder Carl Pei now states that the Nothing Phone (1) will actually be based on a variant of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset specially adapted for the device. Pei also confirmed the rest of the leaked data. The version of the 778G adapted for the phone (1) – it goes by the name 778G+ – also has an octa-core CPU consisting of four performance (ARM Cortex-A78) and four efficiency cores (ARM Cortex-A55 ) composed.

What is the added value of the 778G+?

According to Input Mag, the benefits of the 778G+ lie in wireless charging and reverse wireless charging – features typically reserved for Qualcomm’s flagship chipsets. However, it is not clear whether Qualcomm has really added them exclusively for the Nothing Phone (1). According to Carl Pei, Nothing chose the 778G because of its performance, lower power consumption and cost. In his opinion, mobile phones have reached a point where performance is sufficient for general tasks and more powerful chips are of diminishing usefulness. As explained by Input Mag, the 778G is manufactured with 6nm technology, which achieves an improvement of around 30 percent in terms of device heating and energy saving. Therefore, this chipset is better suited for saving power than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ (5nm) or 8+ Gen 1 (also 5nm).
