Apple iPhone 15: 5G modem from Apple is said to be a long time coming [Gerücht]

from Claus Ludewig
Apparently there will be no separate Apple modems in the iPhone in 2023 either. Thus, Qualcomm would also be the supplier for the 5G network chips for the possible iPhone 15.

After Apple had been buying Intel modems for the mobile chip in its iPhones for some time, the manufacturer now relies on Qualcomm network technology. As early as 2023, however, Apple wanted to develop and build its own cellular modems. Now, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is reporting that Apple is not ready in time with their own 5G modem. In 2019, the iPhone manufacturer took over Intel’s modem department in order to be able to develop network chips itself. So far, this team has developed the U1 ultra-wideband chip for the most precise location possible, which made its debut in the iPhone 11.

Qualcomm will probably remain the supplier of 5G chips in iPhones until 2027

Apple hopes its own 5G modems will save on power consumption. After all, active 5G consumes significantly more energy than its predecessor, LTE. With a self-developed network chip, the use of wireless connections could probably be better managed with the operating system. As a result, intelligent control could reduce power consumption and increase iPhone battery life. However, Apple will not finish developing a modem for the possible iPhone 15 in time.

According to insiders, Apple could come up with a specially developed modem for the iPad for the first time at least next year. After all, an iPad with cellular technology does not sell in the same numbers as an iPhone. Apple has recently signed a license agreement with Qualcomm, which can be extended by two more years to 2027. Consequently, one would only have to publish one’s own modems in large series by the year 2027.

Collection on the 5G modem in iPhones:

  • If Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst at TF Securities, has his way, Apple will not launch an iPhone with a specially developed 5G modem in the coming year either. The department bought by Intel in 2019 does not finish the development in time.
  • It is possible that Apple’s own modem will make its debut in an iPad, since the cellular version of the tablet has fewer units than the iPhones and is therefore suitable for testing.
  • With the possible iPhone 15, however, Apple should continue to rely on network chips from Qualcomm. The license agreement between the two companies can be extended until 2027.
