Skyrim: Modder brings dragons to Tamriel in 16K resolution

The modder Xilamonstrr has already released some 4K and 8K textures for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. However, his eagle eyes seem to have had enough of 8K, because now Xilamonstrr has upscaled it 16K textures for the open world roleplaying game released – if only for the dragons of Tamriel. Basically, this doesn’t seem to make sense, at best a resolution of 1440p has leveled off for gamers, and many gamers are still content with Full HD. However, the dragons in Skyrim are enormous creatures, and so their textures can stretch far more than any other creature in the game.

A dragon wing measures 7,380 x 4,020 pixels

Xilamonstrr has detailed his work on the Texture Pack (6K-8K Dragon Replacer Pack LE) Nexus Mods page. The textures, which have now been freed from compression artifacts, are said to have originally been available in 1K, 2K and 4K – his package has been increased to 4K, 8K and 16K accordingly. Xilamonstrr explains the reason for this as follows: “All resolutions listed are the maximum resolution and most texture files are twice as long as they are wide. So the 16K version has files that are 8192 x 16384. Dragons are VERY large and I would recommend you look below that presents two 8K files side by side, rather than a full 8K. At 16K, a dragon wing is 7380 x 4020 pixels, a head is 3320 x 2480 pixels, and the entire rear body and legs are just 6080 x 4580 pixels fight up close and want to see it in 4K resolution, then you need to have the dragon in 16K.”

A total of four files are offered on the Dragon Body Lift Nexus Mod page. In addition to the 16K textures, there is also an 8K version available for download. There are also packages with 2K and 1K or 4K textures for computers of the “mashed” or “baked potato” type. The file sizes here range from 208.3 megabytes to 1.6 gigabytes.
