As Dusk Falls (Xbox One, Series X/S)

As Dusk Falls – Trailer introduces interactive drama for Xbox

Annika Bavendiek: My interest this summer is clearly in the interactive crime drama As Dusk Falls, in which we follow the lives of two bonded families after a robbery goes awry. Through decisions and quick time events, we (alone or in co-op with up to seven other players) make a significant contribution to how the characters behave and the story ultimately ends. This raises the question of how much we sacrifice ourselves for our loved ones, who betrays whom and how to deal with all the feelings.

I was able to find out for myself in a small allusion session that the story builds tension. The really special thing about As Dusk Falls is not necessarily the interesting dynamic between the characters, but rather the idiosyncratic style. Instead of being able to freely explore the environment in real time, like in the Life is Strange games, we experience the game as a kind of graphic novel with moving illustrations.

This style takes a lot of getting used to at first, but at some point I didn’t bother anymore and saw it as an exciting, alternative way of bringing the story even more into focus. I’m at least very excited to see what happens next when As Dusk Falls comes out on July 19th.

SSX (Xbox 360)

SSX – Gameplay trailer with Mathieu Crépel

Chris Werian: I prefer to counter the heat of the day with cold snow, crazy speed and the coolest tricks that are built into kilometers of descents. Which series is it in question? Of course SSX! The third part of the series made me survive many hot summer months in my former attic apartment almost single-handedly and the 2012 reboot also followed this tradition.

The wonderfully unrealistic but immensely fun snowboarding game didn’t come close to its great predecessors, but it still easily wipes the floor with modern representatives of the genre. Step out of the bindings, spin the board, and spin 10 times? That’s not possible in Steep and Shredders, but such escapades are part of the basic repertoire in SSX.

I’m also quite susceptible to high score hunts and in that respect SSX draws on the full. Hardly anything is as much fun as bringing combos to thumping electro beats that last for minutes on the slopes, while the cold wind blows against you (at least mentally)!

Subnautica (Xbox One)

Subnautica – Gameplay trailer announces underwater survival game for PS4

Tobias Veltin: With the sometimes tropical temperatures in summer, I make sure that I get a certain visual cool-down in the titles I play. And that mostly happens with chic animated water. Sea of Thieves is a prime example, the beautifully and detailed animated waves always get my heart pumping so much that I want to throw myself straight into the virtual floods.

Subnautica can’t quite keep up in this category, but it does have a relaxing element that shouldn’t be underestimated. Because the underwater world of the title, which was released in 2018, is bursting with life and small details, so that I regularly forget the survival mechanics during the exciting exploration, which I usually don’t really like.

All of this embedded in a beautiful diving game that I can escape into even on particularly hot days. Because the idea of snorkeling through the cool oceans of a foreign planet actually cools me down a bit mentally.

The Outer Worlds (Xbox One)

The Outer Worlds release date revealed in E3 2019 trailer

Samara Summer: In our PS Plus Premium Bonus Game Recommendations article, I recommended Greedfall to you because I like role-playing games that require me to make difficult moral choices. This also applies to a highly acclaimed game that I just haven’t found the time to play, namely The Outer Worlds. With the Game Pass, I finally want to catch up on the title in the next few weeks.

So far, I’ve only woken up from hibernation with my newly created character, met a mad scientist, and taken my first steps in the extraterrestrial world. In this, large corporations have gained power over humanity. The typical Fallout style, which is unmistakable in many places, immediately made me want more.

Of course, I’ve already been involved in the first skirmishes, I’ve tested stealth and combat mechanics, but these aren’t the incentive for me to throw myself into The Outer Worlds. Above all, I want to get my own impression of the quests, dialogues and characters, which are often described as cool, funny and lovingly designed.

The column that my colleague dedicated to Eleen Parvati brought this to my attention again. By the way, the RPG does not have an open game world, even if we do a little planet hopping. That’s fine with me, since I’m throwing myself into the title with relatively little time

Skate (Xbox 360)

Skate 3 trailer

Skate 3 trailer

Linda Sprenger: Skate 4 is in the works right now, but it’s probably going to be a while before I can jump into the latest installment of the skateboarding sim series. After all, fans can now register for the playtest.

To bridge the waiting time, I once again throw the very first skate as well Skate 3 which you can both play with EA Play. Graphically the titles show their age, of course, but the skate sessions are still just as fun as they were back then.

Don’t know how skate works? Unlike the arcade Tony Hawk games, here you don’t just push buttons to string together wildly fast-paced and breakneck combos, but move more realistically on the board and pull off tricks by pushing the analog stick in different directions. This makes the gameplay much slower than in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Co., but I personally enjoy it a little more because it’s closer to real skating and has a certain coolness factor.
