6 year old mobile ARPG looks exactly like Diablo Immortal - fans suspect bold copy

The mood at Diablo Immortal is changing. Now some fans have also found a game that looks exactly like Immortal, but is already 6 years old. They suspect that the basic structure was taken over and simply given new skins.

That’s the situation with Immortal right now

  • Since June 2nd, Diablo Immortal has officially been released and there is still no new update.
  • The only new content is a second, way too hard raid boss. The mood among the fans is currently changing.
  • Now there is new resentment in the community, because some fans have found a mobile game that Diablo Immortal is said to have only been copied from.

What kind of game is this? Endless of God, also known as Elder God or Endless God, was released in August 2016 as a mobile alternative to Diablo in China. However, the game was discontinued again in February 2020.

The game was an action RPG based on the epic of Homer from Greek mythology. Among known characters, players should compete there as one of 4 classes against the “evil gods”.

However, the game was only released in Chinese and never in the West. We have included gameplay for you here:

“From bad to worse”

What the fans say: As early as 2018, when Diablo Immortal was presented, there was an accusation that Immortal was just a brazen copy. Back then it was about the exact same game, Endless of God.

Some fans are open today reddit compare the games again. Now that we know the gameplay and visuals of Diablo Immortal well, it’s easier to spot similarities.

The community is outraged by the obvious similarities, but not surprised. Immortal is “the same game”, i.e. a copy, but something like this is done all the time in the so-called gacha games anyway.

It’s common practice for developers to just release the same game with a new skin. And since NetEase is the developer behind both games, it’s even less surprising.

Only the degree of copying is particularly striking here. It even cites our own interview with Wyatt Cheng, where the game director explains how long the development time for certain content is. The fans no longer believe this statement after the pictures.

Is the game really a brazen copy? In fact, the gameplay shown above looks like that of the Barbarian from Diablo Immortal with almost identical skills, albeit different weapons. The system with the charging Ultimate is also the same.

The almost copied login screen and the interface of the two games are particularly striking. However, the gameplay snippet lacks information on features such as the clans and other MMO content that make up Diablo Immortal.

Developers often recycle their work and change the look or story, such as in the Fallout series. It is usually not very lucrative and not necessary to create a completely new engine for each new game.

Whether to see Immortal as a bold copy or simply as a new iteration of a game with a new story, new look and translations for the West is a matter for everyone to decide for themselves. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus would like to see more of the game in the upcoming Diablo 4:
