Possible Steam tip: Rogue-lite building game in a fantasy world

from Alexander Ney
Against the Storm is the name of a new rougue-lite building game that is currently embarking on its Early Access development journey. What is special about the single-player game is the ungracious fantasy setting with “constant” rain and occasional plague storms. On the other hand, it literally expands the settlements customary in the genre to infinity – and so any number of settlements can be built on the map, which is divided into five biomes.

The new construction game Against the Storm shifts strategic settlement building into an uncompromising fantasy setting. Here, in the company of beavers, lizards and harpies, people build their permanent homes – and have to brave adverse weather conditions (according to the developers of Eremite Games, it rains constantly) and above all destructive plague storms. However, what makes Against the Storm particularly interesting is that it allows players to place an unlimited number of settlements on the map. It is divided into five biomes in order to make the construction tasks as varied and challenging as possible. In addition, as the five-person development team says, the game takes advantage of the high replay value of rogue-lites. On the Epic Games Store Against the Storm has already started its Early Access journey. On Steam the promising strategy title should not appear until the fourth quarter of 2022.

Build for the Burnt Queen

Against the Storm’s backstory turns single players into viceroys and pioneers of the Burnt Queen, tasked with establishing new settlements in the wilderness. The goal of the game is to survive until enough resources have been gathered to rebuild the Smoldering City. The ultimate foe is the devastating, map-changing plague storm that has killed the Smoldering City. The gathering of raw materials by the settlers (who in the course of this have to assemble external storage) is becoming increasingly difficult. Because “with every looted, ancient site” and “every tree felled” the anger of the forest or the other four biomes grows, which produces various monstrosities in the trailer.

According to the developer, all of this takes place in a living world in which you can also trade extensively with your own settlements. Furthermore, the strengths of groups such as beavers and lizards should be able to be used to balance different needs. These relate, for example, to accommodation, culinary preferences and leisure activities. Accordingly, for example, raincoats have to be made, beer brewed and cakes baked. The current Early Access roadmap presumably does not show the entire developer project. However, it suggests a longer process, as the individual update phases each last four months. A release date is therefore not yet known.
