Gigabyte S55U: Large gaming monitor with 1,500 cd/m² peak brightness

The Gigabyte S55U is, as the model name suggests, a 54.6-inch gaming monitor that wants to combine the size of a television with that of a gaming monitor. It shines with a powerful backlight.

If you are still looking for a gaming monitor that can not only occupy a desk but also a closet, the Gigabyte S55U is the right choice. The 54.6-inch device with a quantum dot panel wants to combine the dimensions of a television with the functions of a monitor, but fails with the connections: image signals only come via HDMI 2.1 to the 4-UHD panel with 120 Hertz and VA Technology. There is no display port and it shouldn’t be very practical due to the length of the cable.

The Gigabyte S55U offers the already mentioned VA panel with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and 120 Hertz, which achieves 96 percent DCI-P3 and 140 percent SRGB as well as a contrast of 5,000:1. It shines when it comes to backlighting: the direct-acting LEDs achieve a typical brightness of 500 candelas per square meter and a peak brightness of 1,500 candelas per square meter and are divided into 132 zones. Freesync Premium is also included for gamers.

The device is connected via HDMI 2.1 (48 Gb/s) and HDMI 2.0. There is USB and network, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The equipment is due, among other things, to the built-in Android system, which also allows access to the Google Play Store. The S55U also has the gigabyte gaming features known from other devices. As expected, the foot can’t do much for the size of the device; if you want more, you can use the VESA mount with 400 x 300 millimeters. Arms and wall brackets must be able to support 5.2 kilograms. Gigabyte specifies a typical power consumption of 83 watts. Two speakers, each with 10 watts, provide basic sound reinforcement; The signals can also be forwarded via an optical output. Price and availability were not mentioned at the time.
