Thor: Love and Thunder: Here’s what we think of the new Thor movie

Thor: Love and Thunder: Thor

What’s the use of saving the galaxy multiple times if you’re not at peace with yourself? Thor, the god of thunder, has been asking himself this question for quite some time. Just stupid: In the meantime he has even moved his musings to the battlefield, much to the chagrin of the Guardians of the Galaxy, with whom Thor travels through the universe. For his latest adventure, however, the thunder god has to part with his friends. Because a mysterious figure kills one god after the other. Taking them down is a task the Guardians are not up to, at least Thor believes. That’s why he sets out alone to solve the riddle of the dead gods. His first destination: the earth.

Superhero at last – Jane Foster becomes the Mighty Thor

Once there, Thor quickly realizes that a lot has changed. Like in New Asgard. The residents have transformed their settlement into a popular tourist spot under the guidance of Valkyrie. Although they are happy to see their old leader again, they are less happy about the destruction that follows on their heels, so to speak. In fact, they already have a god of thunder to help them: none other than Thor’s ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who managed to piece together the fragments of Mjolnir and become the Mighty Thor.

For the thunder god, this means countless problems. Not only have his ex-girlfriend and ex-gun teamed up, but behind the godslaying is a villain named Gorr, who possesses the Necroblade, one of the few weapons that can kill gods. And Gorr will not stop until all gods are destroyed.

Not much more should be revealed about Thor: Love and Thunder at this point. Because unlike the spoiler-proof Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder has no major surprises (save for a very special scene starring Thor actor Chris Hemsworth) and no last-minute dramatic twists. What there are are some small clues as to how things might continue in the MCU – but they have next to nothing to do with the plot. The story focuses entirely on Thor and Jane, their relationship and the question of what is more important: saving the universe or being happy?

Can you get a little less silly?

In its best scenes, Thor: Love and Thunder is therefore one of the most emotional things Marvel has brought to the cinema in years. Especially the final battle against Gorr is great and the many small moments between Thor and Jane are just beautiful. However, they all have to compete with the scenes where director Taika Waititi’s penchant for silliness just gets too much. Is it really necessary that father of the gods Zeus has a bad Greek accent? Do Thor’s new goats have to bawl that often? And can Thor’s rocky friend Korg be anything other than Comic Relief? On the other hand, there is Christian Bale, who plays one of the best Marvel villains ever, and Natalie Portman, who has a lot of fun as Mighty Thor Jane Foster. Then there’s the music, showing that there’s a Guns ‘n’ Roses song for every occasion, and the coloring that could be straight out of an ’80s heavy metal comic.

One almost gets the impression that Taika Waititi couldn’t decide what he wanted to shoot and then just said “everything”. Anyone who has seen Thor: Ragnarok should be familiar with the feeling of this roller coaster ride. It reminds you a little of the end of a huge all-you-can-eat buffet: You are stuffed and satisfied, but somewhere in the back of your mind the uncomfortable question arises as to whether it was really so clever to have a sugar-sweet dessert of all things to have fetched a refill.
