Kojima Productions: News Channel Misidentifies Hideo Kojima as Shinzo Abe Assassin

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated. A news station falsely reports that Kojima is the culprit.

Shinzo Abe was Japanese Prime Minister from 2012 to 2020, and many politicians admired him and his work. He was assassinated on Friday on his way to give a campaign speech. Due to tasteless reports on the internet, it was claimed that Hideo Kojima, founder of Kojima Productions, was the assassin.

Racist jokes were made on various internet platforms claiming that all Japanese look the same and it was “jokingly” said that the killer was Hideo Kojima.

Such jokes are inappropriate and clearly go too far, as it now shows. But this “rumor” only really took off when the French politician Damien Rieu this fake news, obviously not knowing that it was just a lousy joke, more widespread.

The Frenchman may have deleted his posts, but the internet never forgets. So one thing led to another and a report by a Greek news channel showed photos of Kojima while reporting on the actual assassin. The video has since been removed.

The culprit has already been caught and it was natural not Hideo Kojima! The game developer has this incident voiced:

“Kojima Productions strongly condemns the spread of fake news and rumors that spread false information. We do not condone such defamation and will consider legal action in some cases.”
