Since September 2020, Facebook aka Meta has stopped selling VR headsets in Germany. The reason for this was probably a conflict with the Federal Cartel Office as a result of the introduction of the obligation to have a Facebook account for the VR glasses. At the end of 2021, Meta stated that the mandatory linking of Oculus and Facebook accounts should end, and a concrete announcement has now followed.

From August 2022, the “account structure” at Meta will change. After that, it will no longer be necessary to use a Facebook account when creating new accounts for Meta Quest hardware. Instead, a Meta Horizon account is now used for the former Oculus headsets. Existing Oculus profiles will be converted to Meta Horizon. However, if you have already merged a Facebook account with your Oculus profile, you will need to create a new Meta Horizon account.

Instead of friends, you have followers in Meta Horizon, analogous to Instagram. Linking Meta Horizon to Facebook and Instagram is optional. Since the user data of Meta’s various social media services is no longer obligatory to be merged, the direct distribution of Meta Quest in Germany could also be resumed (however, it was always possible to import the Quest VR glasses from other countries and put it into operation here).
