Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a PS5 Exclusive and that’s because of the ‘huge game world’

After being multiplatform for quite a while, the Final Fantasy franchise is fast becoming a PlayStation exclusive again. Just like Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will also be available at launch only for the PS5. The Xbox and PC being left out is arguably due to a deal between Sony and Square Enix, but why isn’t there a PS4 version of Rebirth? This question has now been clarified.

Does Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth really have an open world?

It’s all about this: In an interview with the Japanese portal gamers (translated by gematsu), producer Yoshinori Kitase gave us a little insight into the development of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

We already knew that the next part of the remake trilogy will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 (for the time being). But now we also know the reason behind the decision to no longer serve the last generation of consoles:

It comes exclusively for PlayStation 5, of course, because of the graphic quality, but also because of the high speed of the SSD. Since the adventure unfolds in a massive world after escaping Midgar, load times are an extreme bottleneck. We felt we needed PS5 tech to bypass it and travel the world comfortably.

Open world is rather unlikely: Kitase speaks of an enormous game world, but that is not synonymous with a real open world. In fact, you shouldn’t expect a game world like Skyrim or Zelda: Breath of the Wild that opens up completely to you right at the beginning of the adventure.

It is more likely that Square Enix will build individual areas that can be walked freely – such as in The Witcher 3 or Dragon Age Inquisition – and perhaps connect them with an overworld map. In any case, Rebirth should be more open than the original.

The first trailer for Rebirth already hints at the more open game world:

Are the chocobos returning? If Rebirth really has one or more open worlds, chances are very good that the chocobos will be part of the game again. The yellow giant chicks serve as substitutes for horses in the Final Fantasy universe and have already carried us over many a world map. The fluffy mounts’ return is all the more likely since we’ve already seen them in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, although we haven’t had the chance to ride them yet.

In any case, we will soon find out whether the game world of FF7 Rebirth is a real open world, because Square wants to reveal this secret in the next presentation of the game.

Here’s what’s new about the story: According to Kitase, all of the major plot points from the original will find their way into Rebirth, expanded and enhanced with new mysteries and stories. Only the structure of places and the story should have changed a little.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released for the PS5 in winter 2023.
