New anime RPG is reminiscent of Genshin Impact with a dark setting - shows action-packed fights in the trailer

Wuthering Waves will be the name of Kuro Game’s new anime RPG. It is intended to offer a high degree of freedom in an open world. The optics and some mechanics are reminiscent of Genshin Impact, but the atmosphere promises to be darker.

What is the game about? In Wuthering Waves you play a “Rover” (English: Wanderer) in a post-apocalyptic world. You can explore this sprawling open world to your heart’s content, uncover secrets and face numerous enemies in action-packed battles.

  • You wake up as a “Rover” one hundred years after a cataclysm called “Calament” in a new world. Since that event, previously unknown creatures have proliferated and spread destruction.
  • To explore this world, you can climb buildings and walls, swing around with the grappling hook and glide through the air.
  • The developer is known for extensive stories.
  • Yes, it will be a gacha game.
  • The fights should all revolve around speed and action. You won’t find turn-based battles, tab targets or target selection here.
  • Compared to genre representatives like Genshin Impact and The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, the atmosphere looks much darker and more melancholic.

So far there is gameplay from PC and mobile devices. Whether a console version is coming is unclear. This trailer gives you a first glimpse of the game:

This is the state of affairs after technical testing

This is what the gameplay shows: After the technical test, there are first impressions of the gameplay. Fast-paced fights with numerous effects can be seen in the recordings published by YouTuber Steparu.

While the gameplay trailer mainly showed fast-paced sword fights, the player is accompanied by a floating creature that seems to be responsible for most of the attacks. There are also elemental attacks.

The locomotion is similar to what is known from games like Genshin Impact or Breath of The Wild: You can explore the world on foot, swing through the area with a grappling hook or float through the air with a glider.

We remember that: There probably won’t be a character creator. Instead, you can choose between a male and a female character. The latter in particular is convincing with its design: in contrast to many characters in comparable titles, it is neither overly sexualized nor too childlike.

It is not yet known how the monetization will work exactly, but it should probably be a gacha game. You can read here what is behind a gacha game and how Genshin Impact was monetized.

In a gacha game in an open world with an anime look, the comparison to Genshin Impact is of course obvious. And indeed, some of the recordings could also be of a new area in Genshin. Also some of the puzzles shown during the technical test show a certain similarity.

The post-apocalyptic setting and the rather muted colors paired with the atmospheric music in the CG trailer create a much darker and maybe a bit more mature atmosphere. Some commentators even see a similarity to Death Stranding here.

When can you expect the game?

A date is not yet known. Based on the state of development, however, a release before 2023 is not to be expected. It is also not yet known whether the release will be global or just in China for the time being. However, given an English-language trailer and YouTube channel, there is hope for a simultaneous release. A release in the west is planned.

The pre-registration is already running, but initially only for Android and iOS (via Tap Tap).

That’s what the players want

There have been numerous reactions from the community to the technical test. Above all, it becomes clear that one does not want a pure Genshin clone and that Wuthering Waves should develop its own identity (via reddit).

Especially fans of Punishing: Gray Raven look forward to fast, action-packed fights with difficult bosses. They therefore want the skill cooldown system to be revised or eliminated, as this could slow you down.

Again and again there is a desire to involve the grappling hook more actively in the fights instead of just letting it fall on the opponent. Here there would also be an opportunity to stand out from the competition with interesting fights in the air.

Since the game is still being actively developed, one can assume that some things will be improved and perhaps also restructured before the release. Let’s see what else happens before the beta.
