The official music video for the Star Guardian 2022 event

Video shows schoolgirls and magical transformations

What is it about? Just in time for the start of the ten-week Star Guardian 2022 summer event, Riot released a music video on the official LoL YouTube channel. The event brings back the eponymous Star Guardian skin line, which is part of a popular alternate universe.

The Star Guardians are a group of students chosen to protect the universe from dark forces. In addition, they can transform into magical girls (and boys!), as has been known from Sailor Moon since the 90s.

Of course, the associated skins have to be advertised, which is why Riot teamed up with American musician Porter Robinson and released an anime-style video. That already reached several million views and thousands of likes and comments on the first day.

“Everything Goes On” is the title and shows the events of the short story “Twin Stars” by Cat Cheresh. In what is now the fourth installment of the popular alternative universe, a new generation of Star Guardians awaits you alongside the return of familiar faces. (via Riot Games)

Fans react emotionally

There are great feelings and tears: Especially the story of the champs Rakan and Xayah is well received by the fans. Many are moved and even say they are moved to tears. But not only their love story, but also the friendship between Kai’Sa and Alkali arouses emotions.

I wasn’t expecting to actually cry while watching the video, but now here we are. Pairing Riot’s animation team with Porter Robinson’s emotionally charged music makes for such a dangerous work of art. You win this time, Riot. I’ll play your broken game some more.

The inclusion of male characters, which is rather unusual for the genre, also resonates. Some are even so enthusiastic that after Arcane they want the next LoL series from Netflix.

But not all reactions are positive. While the story and the video are well received, criticism of the event itself is growing. Especially for a big summer event, the rewards are not big enough and hardly worth the grind:

In the event you fight your way through missions to collect tokens. The chapters are unlocked weekly and each consist of 3 acts. A new chapter cannot be started until the previous one has been completed by defeating the 2 bosses.

The rewards are mainly icons and emotes.

The first fans already want their own star guardian anime. After the Netflix hit Arcane, however, there will now be a novel in the universe of League of Legends.
