This time I go in search of the Arkham Slicer, meeting all sorts of strange people, fighting weird monsters and finding more story twists than I would like.

This content would not be financially viable without the premium users. But we urgently need more supporters: You can help too!

In my diary I tell you about my strange experiences in roleplaying Stygian-Reign of the Old Ones. But beware: the entire article is a single spoiler, so if you still want to experience the game for yourself, you should stop reading now.

In the first part, I arrived in run-down Arkham with my specially created cursed aristocrat character after being lured there by the “Uncanny One”. However, he left me alone early on, so that I first had to find my way around in my new home.

Unfortunately, early on I was forced to mourn the loss of my faithful servant Werner, but over time I was allowed to add two other allies to my party: The “Outcast”, who was about to be set on fire by a mob, and Miss Carter who lost her husband in the dreamlands. We experienced our first adventures together. Finally, we found a body that appears to have been dismembered by the “Slasher of Arkham”…

Miss Carter doesn’t understand every decision I make, and she seems to have to tell me so.

A possible way out and a little change

But the slasher can wait first, because now we first visit Stanley Fredkin, who promised us a possible way out of Arkham in the Old Eel House. Did I mention that no one can leave Arkham since Black Day? ahem.

On the way, a lady from the horizontal trade approaches me and asks me if I would like to have a little fun… Not being too serious, I reply that it has to be free of charge. Lo and behold, she agrees, for whatever reason. Sweaty and smiling, I return to my companions and the game grants me some composure points… crazy. My companion Sonia Carter gives me a sermon immediately afterwards. How could I find joy in “the callous act of carnal lust”? Well, if she has to ask that, it probably isn’t worth arguing with her about.

After that little diversion, I take another look at the note I got from the rustic-looking man. This leads me to number 39 on Main Street. There I meet Fredkin, who asks me to help him “finish his work”. After that we could leave Arkham together. Aha. Not dubious at all.

For his work, whatever that is, Fredkin needs three things that we need to get for him: a radio transmitter, some wire, and formaldehyde. Nothing easier than that?!

Fredkin is about to make a breakthrough! We’d be happy to do a few side jobs for him, wouldn’t we?

The slasher’s trail and the detective’s help

But somehow I’m not in the mood to play errand boy for Fredkin right now, so I’ll start chasing the Slasher first. My first port of call is Detective Wilkins, whom I picked up at my dump, the Old Eel House. After I’ve provided him with alcohol, he’s at least basically willing to talk. But first he asks me for a favor: I should help him with his phantom pain he is feeling due to a lost arm. With an improvised construction made of a mirror that fools him into believing that his arm is there again, this even succeeds.

Now the detective tells us his first investigation results. Apparently the local mafia boss “Wax Face” has put his people on the slasher because he obviously feels his authority is threatened. Aha, so if someone spreads fear and terror, it can only be the mafia. The slasher also has two mafiosi on his conscience: Salvador and Abel, both of whom were dismembered with a broad-bladed sword. But he doesn’t want to reveal more for now. At least not until we figure out something to share with him.

That’s all well and good, so me and my two companions start investigating. To do this, we go to the Essex Hotel, in front of which the last victim of the slasher was found, and first ask the concierge Etienne. He also tells us something relatively voluntarily about the last victim named Julian. Apparently he checked in with three other people just before black day: Salvador, Abel, and Keelan.

With this first investigation success, I proudly run back to the detective, who immediately presents his theory to me: Since three of the four Mafiosi from the hotel room are already dead, the Mafioso named Keelan who is still alive must be the slasher! He might have other leads that he shares with us, but we might get to that later.

Etienne is only slightly snooty, but otherwise quite a nice guy.

Sex magic and ex-magicians at the Essex Hotel

I definitely need to find out more about the people at the Hotel Essex, so I revisit the building and decide to take a closer look at the hotel rooms, especially Julian’s. Unfortunately, according to the concierge Etienne, a trigger-happy drunk named Carrion Jack lives in this room now, and I’d better avoid him for now. No problem, there are plenty of other rooms to explore. On my foray through the hotel rooms I discover, among other things, a room in which a sex-magic ritual was apparently performed, and I learn that no children have been born since the black day. Among all the sex-magic stuff left behind, I even find an artefact that goes into my pockets, the “Venus von Willendorf”.

In another room I meet the “great Horatio”, a meanwhile run-down ex-magician, from whom I can elicit interesting information after some persuasion. He tells me about his encounter with Wax Face, for which he and his assistant were allowed / had to give a private performance. During the trick with his magic box, which he pierces with swords without hurting his assistant, Wax Face suddenly came on stage, snatched the swords from him and began stabbing the box like a madman, killing his assistant. Horatio was held by mafia henchmen and had to watch the cruel game. It’s no wonder that he’s now only dedicated to revenge.

Then he tells me about something that suddenly puts the whole slitter story in a different light: He is said to have observed the murder of mafioso Julian. However, it is said not to have been a human, but a swarm of shadows with black spikes that feed on human flesh… Horatio’s hope now is that this monster will also take on Wax Face and his mafia gang. I’ll leave that uncommented for now, I wouldn’t be surprised. Finally, I find out that Wax Face is based in a dirty club in French Hill. Of course, Horatio wouldn’t mind if I take care of Wax Face or at least get him access to the club, but that’s pretty low on my list for now.

The Great Horatio has seen better days.
