Ultima 1 Fan Remaster: Remastered from Ultima 4 with 1985 graphics

from Michael Miskulin
When a fan sets out to create a remaster of a classic, the targets are often games from the 2000s or 2010s. These are then usually equipped with improved textures and 3D models. An RPG fan took a different approach and pimped the 1981 classic Ultima 1 with Ultima 4 graphics.

There are fan remasters not only for relatively modern titles, but of course also for old retro classics – really old retro classics. For example, the 1981 Ultima 1’s clunky, outdated graphics got a graphical overhaul by a fan – who used the slightly less clunky and outdated graphics from Ultima 4.

Ultima remaster for nostalgics

Modder Jeremy Abrahamson released a complete visual overhaul of Ultima 1, which was first released in 1981. He used the graphically more attractive tileset that was only developed much later for Ultima 4 in 1985. So this mod is aimed at real nostalgics and retro fans of the role-playing genre. Who else could you lure out with a pixelated graphics remaster? But the 80s are en vogue again – thanks to the fourth season of Stranger Things. Incidentally, Ultima 4 would have been released during the second season of the Netflix series.

You can use the mod called Ultima 1 GFX Download here at Archiv.org. The mod is for the DOS port of Ultima 1 – The First Age of Darkness. It should also be mentioned that the mod leaves the general dungeon layout and the world map unchanged. So if you want to play one of the forefathers of the role-playing genre on the PC in a slightly better retro look, you should grab it.
