Sony is introducing its new loyalty program, PlayStation Stars. Unlike PS Plus, this service is free to join. Still, fans are skeptical.

San Mateo, California – Sony wants to offer a new service to its users with PlayStation Stars. In addition to the three paid PS Plus programs, a free loyalty program is now to be established on the consoles. With PlayStation Stars, Sony says it wants to celebrate all players who have embarked on the ever-expanding gaming journey with them. So it looks like your loyalty to PlayStation is about to pay off.

PlayStation Stars: That’s what Sony’s new loyalty program can do

This is what membership brings: Once PlayStation Stars launches later this year, any PlayStation owner can become a member. Participation in the loyalty program, unlike PS Plus, is free, only one registration is required. PlayStation Stars will then offer you different campaigns and activities that you can use to unlock different rewards. These tasks are known so far:

  • “Monthly Check-In”: For this it is enough to play any game every month
  • Win tournaments against other players
  • Unlocks certain trophies in games
  • Be the first to unlock a platinum trophy for a blockbuster title in your local time zone

Sony offers the advantage for PS Plus members: All Playstation Stars users can collect loyalty points. These can be redeemed in a special catalog that will include both PSN credit and PlayStation Store products. PS Plus members can look forward to even more benefits, as they automatically receive loyalty points when purchasing products from the PlayStation Store. For this, the PS Plus members must also be registered for PlayStation Stars.

Other rewards: Sony is also introducing a whole new type of reward. Because PlayStation Stars will also introduce digital collectibles. These are digital images from the PlayStation franchise portfolio. These collectibles can be legendary gadgets or popular characters from games or other entertainment formats.

Launch of PlayStation Stars: According to Sony, the first tests are currently being carried out with PlayStation Stars. But the program should come to the consoles later this year. It will then be introduced regionally in phases. Sony has also gone this way with its new PS Plus models.

PlayStation Stars: Fans fear NFTs for digital collectibles

Sony with NFT allegations: When PlayStation Stars announced the digital collectibles, many fans pricked their ears and suspected the term was a flattering paraphrase for NFTs. But as Grace Chen, Sony’s VP of Network Advertising, revealed in an interview with The Washington Post, the collectibles are not NFTs. The collectibles cannot be traded or sold and do not contain any blockchain technology.

Sony is still in the early stages with PlayStation Stars, and according to the group, the full potential of the program will only become apparent over time. Thus, even after the introduction of PlayStation Stars, there will be constant tweaking.
