Netflix: Cheaper subscription with advertising should come in early 2023
In the course of Netflix’s latest annual report for the second quarter of 2022, there was new information on the introduction of advertising on the streaming platform. We have summarized the most important findings for you.
Public companies like Netflix don’t have it easy. As soon as the high flight is over and the numbers start to fall, unrest spreads. The share price falls. Suddenly doomsayers appear everywhere, reporting that the end is imminent. And of course things need to be done in a timely manner to reverse the trend. Some of Netflix’s solutions: Account sharing should be prevented or monetized if possible, and it should in the foreseeable future a subscription additionally financed by advertising give.
New information about the advertising subscription
In the wake of the recent Netflix’s Annual Report for the Second Quarter of 2022 there was now new information about the planned advertising subscription. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos explained in the earnings callhow the promotional subscription will look like:
- Apparently, in addition to the previous subscription variants, we can expect a new subscription tier with advertising, which will be cheaper than the “normal” subscription without advertising. However, this new advertising subscription is probably not supposed to offer the entire scope of Netflix. It is currently unclear which content is not available in this subscription.
It is clear that the new advertising subscription will not be introduced until the beginning of 2023, in a few selected countries (which again have not yet been mentioned). In this way, those responsible for Netflix want to collect some customer feedback before launching it worldwide.
Netflix and Microsoft – is there something coming our way?
By the way, Netflix is for the advertising subscription a partnership with Microsoft received. Or to put it another way: “Advertisers who turn to Microsoft for their advertising needs will have access to Netflix audience and premium inventory for Connected TV. All ads served on Netflix will be available exclusively through the Microsoft platform.“
Since that announcement, rumors have been circulating that Microsoft could acquire streaming platform Netflix after closing the Activision-Blizzard deal (via Dexerto) or that those responsible for Netflix hope to be bought by Microsoft in the medium term. According to industry insiders, apart from Microsoft, there are hardly (none?!) other companies that have the financial means and at the same time can hope that such a deal will be waved through.
