German game developer unpacks: That’s how much you earn in the industry

New AAA Studio: "Our first game is guaranteed not to be a live service game" (1)

How much do you actually earn as a game developer? This question is likely to be asked more often by both players and prospective developers. A studio from Hamburg is now drawing attention to precisely this question. Innogames recently published the salary ranges for various positions within their company. For the Developer, Game Designer, Marketer, Artist, Analyst, Community Manager, Product Manager, Quality Assistance Engineer and System Administrator positions, the salary bands are broken down into various sub-categories on the company’s website. This is how a junior developer at Innogames earns in the year between 48,000 and 58,000 euros gross. For comparison, a head developer earns over according to the table 115,000 euros gross in the year. A game designer, on the other hand, earns between 58,000 euros and 85,000 euros gross.

A question of transparency

Michael Zillmer, co-founder and COO of the company behind titles like Forge of Empirescomments on the publication of the PDF as follows: “Salary transparency is a question of fairness – not only towards the employees, but also towards the applicants. That’s why we’ve decided, after publishing our salary bands internally last year, to go public with them.

I hope that other games companies will now also dare to come out and thus further refute the still widespread prejudice that our industry pays poorly. In fact, Innogames salaries are in the top third of the German market.”

What is the studio hoping for?

The Director of Human Resources at Innogames, Dr. Andreas Lieb, also emphasizes that “several positive effects from our release” expect. These include a lower drop-out rate for applications, a higher attractiveness for people outside the gaming industry, or the signal of a pay gap that, according to Lieb, does not exist in the studio.
