The Amiga is coming (PCGH-Retro, July 23)

The Amiga is coming – that happened on July 23rd. Every day, PC Games Hardware takes a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

… 1985: Many grew up with Commodore’s home computers in the 80s, especially the cheap VC20 and the extremely popular C64 brought the world of computers closer to many people. But these machines are weak, they are hardly suitable for serious work use or even for multimedia tasks and offer no graphical user interface. Curtain up for the Amiga, which Commodore – after taking over the young company Amiga – is launching on July 23, 1985. Thanks to 16-bit technology, a 7.14 MHz Motorola processor, many modern interfaces and a graphic interface including mouse operation, it is state-of-the-art, but above all its sound and graphic chips make it an enormously powerful machine that also used for video editing. The Amiga series becomes a success and, especially with the later model 500, becomes a popular gaming platform. Commodore also survived the tough competition with Atari’s similarly oriented ST series for many years – but eventually both, along with all other home computers, fell victim to the IBM PC.
